im looking to buy a excursion. i really want to know what do the v-10's get for fuel milage? no b.s. just real numbers. what about with a chip? thanx for any help
Like everyone knows this subject is very biased, but here goes.
Around town, depending on your stop and go, traffic or how short your commutes are be prepared to see anywhere in the 7-10 mpg. On the highway, again depending on your speed somewhere in the 13-16 mpg. While towing expect your in town milage while on the highway. Now this is based on my previous 2 yrs of driving the V-10 and keeping a fuel log.
Since tuning I'm seeing somewhere in the 1-2mpg increase, but the shift point improvements and throttle response are worth it even without the fuel milage increase. Tuning and new y pipe happened in July.
After owning several, my recommendation: do not buy a Ford with a V-10 if mpg is even remotely an issue or concern. Great smooth running engine with plenty of power if geared correctly. Likes gas stations.

pm me, I know where there is a 2003 7.3L Limited Excursion for sale.
It depends on what you call city driving. I get about 12 mpg back and forth to work. It gets around 14-15 on the highway. If you sit in traffic alot it is not going to get very good miliage. These engines burn about the same amount idling as they do while moving. So any time idling kills your mpg. If you sit in traffic all the time and live in a very congested area where it idles more than it moves then expect crappy mpg. I would say 8 is about as bad as it gets and it also depend on how much lead you have in your foot. Mine never sees over 1/4 throttle most of the time unless I am passing someone and I still am accelerating faster than me Ranger does at full throttle. I don't know about how it does towing.
I bought mine for use on trips and towing. I have vehicles that get much better mpg for daily driving.
towing my 30 ft travel trailer ( 6500 lbs) 8- 9 mpg ... city 11 - 12 mpg ... highway 15 -16 ....best i've gotten on a long road trip, with 7 people and all of our stuff ...16.6 mpg ...keeping the rpms 2000 helps alot ... no ethanol gas helps ... driving like my granny helps too
mine gets with me driving a soild 10 mpg towing or unloaded, on road trips i have seen 14 with it, the wife averages 12-13 how she does it i dont know, i have a heavy foot even when towing. my dad drives a f250 v10 4x4 unloaded to read propane meters in it and he gets 11-12 but he drives with an egg under his foot. with the hubs locked in he gets 9-10.5, alot of winter reading of meters around here.
thanx guys for all the info. i will be towing a enclosed snowmobile trailer so im leaning toward a diesel. i want a 7.3 but they are hard to find. i have a line on a 05 6.0 limited. so what are the pro's and con's on the 6.0?
