Just starting working on my wife's 60 F100. The truck was her Grandads, so it means the word to her. Why would Ford only put an key door lock on the passengers door? Was this common on old trucks, or just part of this trucks option package? Just wondering thanks for any feedback.
cause roads were narrow back then and you always parallel parked.. so its a safety feature.. lock the drivers door from inside (push down on the handle), slide across, get out and lock the passenger door from the outside
Ford did that intentionally to fool with us knowing that FTE would be here 60 years later and folks would ask about every month or so why there is only one door lock!

I thought it was great too because a guy like me that doesn't know anything yet had a question that I already knew the answer to
Ford wasn't the only one. Almost every manufacturer did the same. My 37 Chrysler has a door lock only on the right front door.
The streets/highways were much narrower back then, most had no painted divider lines, Botts Dots hadn't been invented yet, so traffic was CHAOS.
The automakers didn't want people locking/unlocking left doors while standing out in the chaotic traffic, so most vehicles only had a right side key lock.
Old films...watch High Sierra (WB: 1941) for a good example, Bogie slides in/out of the passenger seat at least three times.
Static electricity was common cuz many passengers cars (especially Ford's) had mohair (goat hair) seat upholstery.

What I like about this piece of history is that if you had the extra $$ for the deluxe cab you could get a driver's door lock and endanger your life all you wanted to.

A couple of reasons actually.
On the Law books Still to this day, in the Majority of the States, it's Still Illegal to Open your Driver-side door & dismount into traffic while Parallel Parked. As if you think about it, It is Much safer to slide across the seat & dismount ones vehicle onto the Sidewalk as opposed to doing so into traffic.
It may be an Obsolete Law in most Big Cities w/ their Wide Streets, but if you do any Travelling, you'll find that in most Small Towns that still have rather Narrow Streets, that that Law is Still enforced by those cities P.D.'s.
It was also Savings for the Purchaser of the New vehicle @ the time & if you wished for the Drivers door lock to be installed it was an Option that cost extra for Cars or Trucks both. My '58 Custom 300 only had the Passenger-side door lock on her when I purchased her from a pretty High School cheerleader.
ND, but as you know there's a Static Charge Strap that's bolted to & hangs off the Frame to Discharge the Static Electricity because of that. c];-)
For whatever reason, this one little thing fascinates people who look at my truck seemingly more than anything else.
You should come up with a story then that's cooler than the real reason. My friend that thinks he knows everything told me it was because bums used to just jump into your truck at a light and this way you could lock the pass. door and keep them out
