i have done them on my old 94 gmc jimmy where they had to be pressed in and out. it was a bitch but i did it. dealer wanted a grand. 2 other shops that use Moog parts quoted me $650. i can get parts for less then $200. and rent the press for free. just is it worth my time i guess is the question......
Now I've never done ball joints in either of my X's, but I'e done my fair share of ball joints.
Is there anything that makes these any harder than any other 4wd vehicle?
It's a pain in the *** to do ball joints, but it sure saves a lot of money. I found the easiest way it to have NAPA or another shop press them out for you, but I've done them in the driveway with a ball joint press or a BFH.
Maybe I'm ****, but if it needs only one I do both. It's already half apart.
I did it myself and installed the Dynatrac ProSteer ball joints. I had a local shop press in and out the joints ($10 a joint). The rest was pretty easy. The ProSteers are worth the extra money!!
I've done it twice (03 and then 05). 2nd time is always easier. You need good jack stands, a tool to press/hammer out the front drive shafts, and a good ball joint press. Local shop (Advance Auto) rented ball joint tool for free.
Even on my 2nd time, the total job took me 1.5 days. Plan on a weekend of knuckle busting to save at least $400.
