Looking at getting a aluminum intake and 4 barrel carb to throw on my 302 here soon. Hoping to get a boost of power (any idea how much it would help? guess it would depend on the carb?) and hopefully help the mpg a bit.
From what i have heard it seems i should stay in the 600 cfm range? Is there really a bad choice for aluminum intakes, i mean is there really better or worse ones?
Anyways if i could get some help on a outfit to put on it would be appreciated.
Just make sure you stick with a dual plane intake. That would be one with 4 holes where the carb sits, or one with two large holes and a divider in the middle.
Stay away from the single plane intakes. They are the ones with the one large hole under the carb.
I would also stay away from the "air gap" type manifold if you are going to drive your truck in the winter.
Adding a 4bbl aftermarket carb will definitely make a difference you can feel.
Trucks need low rpm pulling power. Being low rpm, you need the passageways in the intake small, as well as a smaller carb. Since there is not as much air flowing though the engine, the smaller carb and passageways keep the air mixture moving faster, keeping the fuel atomized and making it run better at lower rpms.
With a dual plane, they divide the 8 cylinder engine into two banks of 4 cylinders. So when a cylinder opens a intake and starts to pull in air/fuel, it only "sees" half of the carb, and is only sharing that with 3 other cylinders.
With a single plane, the whole carb is open to all 8 cylinders. All 8 cylinders share a large common area under the carb. Each cylinder has to "share" the carb with 7 other cylinders, and each cylinder "sees" the whole carb underneath. This is bad for low rpm operation, but is good for high rpm operation.
I just saw an almost new Weiand intake and holley 4 barrel in the junkyard yesterday. I think it was an 84 f-150. I think it would be about 50 or 60 bucks total.
Check your salvage yards first. The intakes do not really go bad. Look at every ford you see. 302's get stuffed into a lot of things. Those usually have all the goodies.
