I was thinking about painting my replacement dash pad and possibly the door panels black to go with the rest of my all-red interior. I think it might look better to break it up a little for a two toned interior look, but I am having trouble visualizing what it would look like.
I would LOVE to see pics of a dash pad that is a different color than the rest of the dash. Has anyone else done this?
Darn I wish I would have known sooner, I saw a couple of interiors like that at the car show I was at this past weekend but I didn't take any pics. I am contemplating doing something different with my interior because I really don't like the red and white exterior on the red interior. I am considering repainting the truck black/ white exterior, but I am considering a two tone black/gray interior. I have not decided yet.
Search for: Extreme Makeover - Em's Cab Edition and look at pages 8 and 9. It is not of the dash, but clearly shows her two tone door panel treatment. Perhaps this will give you a "vision!"
I saw a truck the other day somewhere on the internet that had what you're looking for. I didn't like it personally, but your tastes might be different than mine.
Unfortunately I can't find it again. Here's the closest I can come. From JBG.com:
Don't have any pics of the door panels but heres a cool two toned dashboard. The door panels are setup just like Em's but with black and silver to match.

Thanks for the pics gentlemen, but 81-F-150-Explorer is closest to the look I was going for.
My truck has a bright Canyon Red exterior with a Canyon Red interior to match. That is a LOT of red, and I was thinking since the steering wheel and parts of the instrument cluster are already black, a black dashpad and doorpanel accents may look good against the beautiful canyon red interior and exterior.
My instrument cluster has the burlwood finish, and that is staying. What I was thinking about doing was going with a black dashpad against the canyon red lower dash, and door panels like what stylin86f150 has. Only on the door panels, I want mine to retain the red carpeted inner panel but the outer areas outside of the chrome trim to be painted black. Everything else (carpet, seats) I would keep in Canyon Red.
I got the idea from a 1989 Ford Mustang I saw that had a contrasting red and black interior:
Thats alot of contrast. It would look great, but i would do black carpet too. Then the red would kind of wrap around the cabin sandwiched between the black of the dashpad and the black of the carpet. What about the headliner?
No, I want the interior to still be Canyon Red, but with black accents. I would keep the red carpet, headliner, and seat fabric.
Taking a good look at the interior of these trucks, you will notice that the entire steering column and steering wheel and parts of the instrument cluster are painted black no matter what color the rest of the interior is. My interior happens to be red, and I just thought that, since my dash pad and door panels need to be redone anyway, black accents to go with the already black trim and red exterior may look cool, yet still retain a somewhat factory look.
Since the dash pad is relatively easy to R & R, why not either use your present one or even a "junker" and spray it. Just set it in place and then you will have a better idea of what the rest of your modifications would look like. Just an idea!
I don't know what you mean by black accents. All I see in my truck is Black, Rosewood, and Chrome.
I'll be honest with you man, I don't think Red and Black are the best colors to mix. Neither are Blue and Black. I would just leave it the way it is now.
