hey guys, i was wondering ow much power my motor has, its an 87 carberueted 302 with no cat, or smog pump or o2 sensor and a magnaflow muffler, the websites i have looked at says it only has 145 horses and i kno that cant be right. any ideas?
There are a couple ways to find out, put it on a dyno or run it down the 1/4 mile. Your motor is mechanically much the same as the later EFI motors so it has similar potential.. which is somewhere around 180-200hp.
wow, i mean, my nieghbor told me between 200 and 250 but hes a chevy guy so i dunno
Well he's not totally wrong, any 5.0 can produce upwards of 250-275hp but it takes a complete exhaust system, a bigger cam, and a little better intake for the carbed versions to get there. But as delivered these motors were smothered down into the 150-200hp range with painfully restrictive exhaust systems and tiny camshafts.
185 HP and 270 lb/ft torque is for the efi model in 1987... I would think it depends on your carb. If you have a 4bbl carb your probably at 185-190HP. If you have a 2 bbl carb you can cut that back 30 HP easily... You can probably expect 5-15HP from a complete new exhaust (headers to tail pipe) in 3in.
Keep in mind the 1980-1985 302 only made 133HP and 233 ft/lbs torque with a 2 bbl carb... I don't know what year the engine you have is... Or what other changes besides a 2-4 bbl carb change was made from the 86-87 lines... but those changes might have effect too... especially if they changed cams...
ya its the manifold into 3 inch pipes to the muffler, then a really big pipe, prob doest matter though, and as i said there is no catalytic converter or smog pump or anything on here, and ive read that robs the performance of motors, and its only a 2bbl, till chirstmas time atleast
Could you be a bit more clear on what size pipe is where on your exhaust? If its too big it won't help your motor any.
Are you saying that the 2 pipes off of each manifold are 3 inch? If so thats way too big and will actually hurt performance on your engine. If the single portion of the exhaust is bigger than 3 inch that will hurt as well.
