It was about how to tell a 6.9 from a 7.3?
The truck is a 1989 F-350 4x4 dually flatdeck.
It has a 5 spd.
you may have asked what the difference is between the two idi's,but it looks like you may not have done so in a thread you started,and or,perhaps not in the idi section.
In that picture in the area from 11 to 12 O'clock on the blue circle around the temp sending unit there is a number stamped in the block on the flat area.
Before you get in as far as the valley pan, behind and right of the IP drive gear cover and left of the head.
Should be something like 6.9D U2U 435779 if you have a late version of the 6.9.
If you have a 7.3 the first numbers will be 7.3D.
Head bolts, 7/16" 12 point heads, 6.9
Head bolts, 1/2" 12 point heads, 7.3
You can see several head bolts above the exhaust manifolds but below the rocker covers on both heads.
Purple circle, 10 and 2 o'clock the circle is over two of my head studs where you would have head bolt heads.

I got some good answers on how to tell the diffrence but I didnt really read them because i didnt have the truck home.
Now i have the truck and cant find the thread?
In regards to the head bolts- what size socket fits each of the bolts? Lots of 7/16" bolts used on Fords have 11/16" heads. Do the 1/2" bolts take a 3/4" socket?
