7.3

I started a thread somewhere and i cant find it.
It was about how to tell a 6.9 from a 7.3?
The truck is a 1989 F-350 4x4 dually flatdeck.
It has a 5 spd.

theses are all your threads that you started in the idi section:

Ford Truck Enthusiasts Forums - Search Results

does that link work i wounder lol.

you may have asked what the difference is between the two idi's,but it looks like you may not have done so in a thread you started, and or,perhaps not in the idi section.

back in '07 you asked the difference between the psd and the idi.maybe thats the one you are thinking of?

In that picture in the area from 11 to 12 O'clock on the blue circle around the temp sending unit there is a number stamped in the block on the flat area.

Before you get in as far as the valley pan, behind and right of the IP drive gear cover and left of the head.

Should be something like 6.9D U2U 435779 if you have a late version of the 6.9.

If you have a 7.3 the first numbers will be 7.3D.

Head bolts, 7/16" 12 point heads, 6.9
Head bolts, 1/2" 12 point heads, 7.3

You can see several head bolts above the exhaust manifolds but below the rocker covers on both heads.

Purple circle, 10 and 2 o'clock the circle is over two of my head studs where you would have head bolt heads.

In regards to the head bolts- what size socket fits each of the bolts? Lots of 7/16" bolts used on Fords have 11/16" heads. Do the 1/2" bolts take a 3/4" socket?

Dave gave you the Socket sizes ...

The 6.9 uses a 7/16" 12 point socket on the head bolts!
The 7.3 uses a 1/2" 12 point socket on the head bolts!

-Enjoy

I dont think the head bolts would take a 7/16 wrench or socket?
7/16 bolts maybe?

Yup they sure do for the 6.9 ... 7/16" 12 point socket!

That is the easiest and quickest way to tell a 6.9 from a 7.3 ...

-Enjoy
