I would be hard pressed to compare the 6.7 to the 6.4. I would compare the 6.4 to the 6.0 because they are basically the same engine under the cylinder heads, but the 6.7 is a totally different animal in almost every respect.

I also find it hard to believe that they put in an additive in the oil to cure a tick in a "tightly designed engine for durability and reliability". That almost sounds like a lawsuit if the right person gets ahold of it!

I can see how the sound was always there, but now that you have noticed it, you can't "not" notice it. I have done it before many times!

Has the dealer said it is normal?

If there are no side effects, you might have to wear earplugs while you drive it to keep yourself from going crazy until something happens with it and you get it covered under warranty. Or just not worry about it....its hard to say.

My point in the whole conversation was just that. To bring up the fact that since these motors are not as loud you notice more of the internal noises.

Ahh, yes, most definitely. I misunderstood it a little bit. It's amazing what kind of noises are there when you take out the normal combustion noises associated with the diesel, and vice versa, if you take away the noises associated with everything that is not the combustion noises of the diesel.

Some of the older mechanical engines with injection pumps were very quiet. Not the 6.9/7.3 engines, but some of the older Internationals like the 360. Great, smooth running engine and very quiet, twice as quiet as the 5.9 cummins 12 valve.

I've had a strange intermittent ticking/tapping noise on my truck since I brought it home from the dealer. I've only had it about a week now with 650 or so miles.

The noise I get is most noticable after sitting in a drive-through line just idling up the line. When I go to take off after getting my goods, there is a very loud OBVIOUS metal on metal tapping noise. It seems to be reflecting off the wall, but after a few seconds it's gone. It almost sounds like the popping/ticking sound you get from a hot exhaust but only louder, and seems to be relative to engine RPM.

I've tried to reproduce in my driveway which runs up the side of my property with a brick wall on one side, and haven't been able to duplicate the sound. It will be interesting to see what happens after an oil change.

BTW, it happened both pre-flash and post-flash so the injector pump ticking I've ruled out.

If you look at how the lifters work on these engines, I wonder if there could be a potential problem with them. They use a solid roller lifter with 2 "mini" hydraulic lifters inside of it. So they use one pushrod for each valve. This engine has 32 hydraulic lifters in there. I have never seen a valve train system like this before. Doesn't mean it isn't used, but if it is a newer design or a modified design of something else, it could have a potential for some bugs to be worked out.

Idling would cause lower oil pressure and potential for lifter leak down, then as engine speed increases, oil pressure goes up and it goes away. THat would be an intermittent scenario. It could just go bad altogether and make a ticking noise always regardless of oil pressure.

Just throwing ideas out there.

I wouldn't park it. Drive it and if it fails the dealer can't say that is normal. You want what may fail to do so during warranty, not after.

Well tonight we were driving home and stopped for a quick geocache. I left the truck running and noticed the ticking noise started a minute or so after jumping out. A couple minutes later the ticking noise was gone. Can't really figure this one out. It comes and goes without any RPM change at all now. I should have tried turning the A/C off/on while it was ticking, but didn't think about it.

That's why I like my 7.3, The thing is so loud and rough everyone in the neighborhood knows when I was headed to work a O dark 30. Hoping to hold out another couple of years with the old girl and then step into the ring on a new one. Good luck and keep us up to date with this one. stg
