Howdy folks, I'm sure I want another Ford I'm just not sure which one. I know you have the knowledge and I'd love you to share a little with me. I was planning on my Lexus GX 470 pulling my 23ft trailer (4500lb) which theoretically it will but I can't find any acceptable mirrors wide enough to see around the trailer. I need a truck anyway to haul stuff and I'd like to list my criteria and hear from some of you experts what you recommend. BTW my first Ford was a 68 Mustang cobra jet and my last one was a tricked out 78 Bronco (ripped off 15 years ago). I'm new to diesel and never liked the noise or smell but I had to buy a little Kubota tractor recently to take care of my roads so I have a new love and now I'll add that to my towing list. I've heard info about good and bad years on motors and trannies but can't remember which for what so please chime in for the old guy here. I need a crew cab, 4x4, towing package, short bed, gas or diesel, and love that Kings Ranch leather. Any recommendations on the BEST year say 2004 - 2009? My alternative will be to go new and back in debt for a 2010 or 2011 but I'd rather not. Thank you in advance for your time, knowledge and friendship.
There are two styles of truck in the years you mentioned. You should go look at both because you may really like the 2008-2009 interior much better. Given the range of years you chose, I would go for a 2006-2007 with the 6.0L. The newer 6.4L has first generation DPF filters on the exhaust and is very hungry for fuel. Personally, in that year range I would avoid diesel altogether and get a V10. But you said you wanted diesel.
I would say your best bet would be a late model 6.0L powerstroke. Like QwkTrip said an 06 or 07. As long as you take care of them and follow the maintenance schedule they are quite dependable. The main thing to remember is to stay away from anything from 03-05 if its a diesel unless its a 2003 7.3L but its hard to find them.

Welcome to FTE If you are dead set on a psd, I would go with a 6.0 from 2006-2007 like the others said. The 6.0 has many more reliability issues than the 6.4, but it doesn't require cab removal for repairs. X2 on avoiding any diesel from those years though.
Thanks guys I appreciate your input. I'm going to pass on the diesel-too many considerations and I've decided to have a truck under warranty so I'll be going with a new one. This time of year should have some good deals coming up.
My towing is limited so a gasser will work and the new 6.2 should do me OK. Now if I could just figure out how to get that Kings Ranch down in price a lilttle.
YUTAHAY (Life is good)
if you're going new you shouldat least take the new diesel out for a test drive, sorry for goin off your choice but i'm really impressed with the new diesel
No doubt it's a good machine. Thanks for your thoughts but I can't see any reason to have the diesel because I don't need that much towing ability, they aren't better on gas mileage, they cost more and there's all the considerations about cold weather, fuel gelling, lights and increased maintenance fees. What was I even thinking to consider one? I'll trade in 3-5 years to stay under warranty so longevity isn't an issue for this vehicle either. It's fun to have new technology although I appreciate taking care of something for the long haul also. I still have my 95 Trooper that's tricked out for off road and still drive it daily and hope to till I die. I find some of you coal throwers pretty funny with your penchant for choking other people up with your noxious emissions. For me there's nothing than being behind a bus that blows that stuff right at you when they take off. Anyway I guess I've determined which side of the fence I stand on and I'm good with it. Thanks again for helping me make my decision.
Well the diesels do get better fuel mileage, without a doubt (except the 6.4's). And their new insta-glow plugs or whatever they call them are supposed to help start better than ever in cold weather but im sure people will chime in on that once we get to winter. The gas engine will be fine for your needs though
