as I am sitting here unable to sleep, a random thought crossed my mind. A freind of mine asked me for a set of the locking hubs from my old scout 2 for his 3/4 ton chevy running gear and I have to ask myself would a set of these work on my ford front end? also I have one of my front axle shafts really banging around in 4wheel so my other question is could my housing be damaged and what do I have to do to fix the wobbly axle shaft. Do i need to replace the whole unit bearing or can i just do the roller bearing? what about those seals too?
In the back of the bearing unit is a small needle bearing that the axle runs on. If these are not greased on a regular basis, they will get rusty and cut away the diameter of the axle. When this happens, the clearance between the bearing and the axle will give you a really bad banging. If it gets bad enough, it will create a terrible vibration while going down the road. You can check this clearence by grabbing the front axle at the ujoint and see how much movement there is up and down in the hub. You will know if it is too much. It will be very obvious. If you have said issue, and decide to purchase a new axle from Ford, purchase a axle for a F450. It will be just the axle from the ujoint out. If you ask for the 250 & 350, it will be the entire axle and cost 3 times as much. They are interchangable.
