Got a truck a month ago. PO had lost a wheel bearing and it took the hub with it. He made a make shift patch to cover the hole and ran the truck in 2wd for 10 years. Well I got the truck and needed 4wd, so I bought a set of Warn hubs. Driver side went in without a problem. The passenger side not so much(Its the side that lost the wheel bearing and lock out). The shaft won't go completely through the locking hub to put the snap ring on the shaft.
Seeing that the end of the shaft was at an angle or beveled a bit. I thought maybe it didn't really need the snap ring. The shaft doesn't come out of the hub. But when I lock it in it makes some rattling sounds. Doesn't do it when I'm on the gas, but does when I'm coming to a stop or hit a bump.
So, my question. Does that axle shaft have to have the snap ring? It's about 1/2 inch to short. What can be going on?
Agreed. Post up a pic so we can see what is going on. Another possibility is that the shaft isn't pushed all the way out when you're trying to put the snap ring on. Grab the u-joint and push the shaft outwards to make sure it's fully engaged in the hub.
*That's as best as I can explain it this early in the morning.*

This could be the problem. Reach back behind the knuckle where the U-joint is and pull out on the axle shaft. It might slide out enough to get the snap ring on.
