I was working under the dash of my car and I got out from under it and hit my head on the rearview mirror and knocked it off. What kind of glue did they used at the factory?? How did they get them to stay up and not fall off. I know that steel plate comes out and i tried gorilla glue, but was not strong enough.
Had similar thing happen to me. Went to adjust the rear view mirror in my '02 Ford Sport Trac and it came off in my hand finishing the crack starting across the windshield.
They sell a kit to reattach it, includes glue, prep pad/cleaner and basic instructions.
Any auto parts store will have it, and they I think they carry it at K-Mart, Wal-Mart too. Costs around $3-5.
Be careful when using it, I almost stuck myself to the glass!
I have used the auto parts store kit with good success on a couple of different vehicles. Be sure the mating surfaces are clean and follow the directions on the adhesive kit and you'll be happy with the results.
I recently replaced my rear-view mirror with a new one. I used the Permatex mirror kit. Use the professional strength one. My ex-son-in-laws brother does windshields for a living, he said to use a lighter to heat up the metal piece and it should fall off...it did. He also said that the Permatex professional strength stuff is just like the stuff that they use, just make sure you follow the instructions to the letter.
