Disposing of Diesel Fuel from HFCM

I bought a 2005 Excursion w/6.0L Powerstroke diesel about a year ago. I've been faithfully draining the water/diesel mix from the HFCM filter every month like you're supposed to. My big jug of drained fuel is now getting full. I'm curious what everyone does with their drained water/fuel mix? Do you dispose of it and, if so, where at?

Even though there's some water in there, half wondering if it'd be good to use as a degreaser in cleaning bicycle chains and stuff like that?

thanks!

I just pour it in the jugs with my waste oil and let the recyler worry about the mix as fuel gets into oil all the time with engine failers in certian engines.

I agree with Wolffee. Since it is only a few ounces each time I have also just burned it in a coffee can. Put a paper towel in the can. It'll act like a wick and burn till the fuel is gone.

I save it and when I have a large burn pile I pour it over the wood and light it..Helps start the fire going for sure..It's not like gas so you don't have to worry about it exploding in your face!!!

Thanks for the tip. Sounds like I can forget the lighter fluid for starting fires on my next camping trip!

That's what I do. It makes a great fire starter and much safer than BBQ fluid.

I've ofter wanted to do this at the campsite as well, but then thought about the SMELL of diesel! If the diesel smoke smells half as bad, I pass. For those that HAVE used it, how bad does it smell?

Depending on how much water and dirt comes out, I typically pour at least half of it back into my tank using a strainer funnel. Most of the water drops to the bottom of the catch bottle, and it's easy to pour the fuel back without getting water in it. Whatever I can't put back I either recycle with the next oil change, or pour onto the wooden expansion joints in my driveway to deter rot.

I haven't noticed any smell and it burns clean. It's not like an oil fire or anything. Pretty much just like lighter fluid, except that it doesn't flare up and it doesn't evaporate as fast. You won't ever get a whooompf.

I don't think I would use it on a charcoal cooking fire, and I'm sure it would leave some taste just like the old fashioned lighter fluid used to do.

Hoe can you tell when all of the water is out of the drain? When I did mine it looked like 100% diesel.

It you use a glass jar the water will sit on the bottom and you can see where the fuel and water separate. Maybe you have no water in your fuel!!! A good thing!! I drain mine till it stops coming out..It will stop less than a quart

I've never found any in mine either. But if you had any it would look like bubbles of air on the bottom of the container.
