2005 6.0 no start...

Got a 05 that im trying to help a buddy of mine get running, its got 130000 on it and so far since he has owned it has lost the IPR twice. Im getting ready to tear into it but was wondering if there was anything else obvios I should be looking for. All it will do is crank, no fire, and yes I did check codes first and there was none but the batteries went dead before I got there. Any help would be appreciated.

There is a "no start" checklist thread in the Tech Folder that walks you through the possibilities and the tests to perform.

Icp went out on me once, easy to change, cheep, try it and also the way to set the internal running memory is to disconnect your batteries and turn the key to run, then turn your head lights on and hit the breaks for 30 seconds. this will drain your capacitors and will reset your memory drive.

--Update--

Well, I tore into this beast and found a bunch of sand under the oil cooler. The screen under the oil cooler was blown out also, so I pulled the IPR and it was trashed also. So I put a new oil cooler and screen, new IPR and a new HPOP, and a EGR cooler delete. Put it back together, primed the oil pump and she fired right up. Only problem I ran into was passenger side intake gasket, apparently when I was setting the intake I broke the back corner of it off. So im gonna try to just loosen the intake and try snaking a new gasket in it this weekend.

Glad you got it all repaired (well almost).

These kind of post get me to wondering though .....

What caused the screen and the IPR to fail???

Was the owner keeping up w/ all his oil changes (using proper oil and filters)? You didn't see any metal did you?

I would get a magnet on that oil pan if it were mine.

My guess is the sand going thriugh the high pressure pump to the IPR blew it out. And yes, this truck was well maintained. In my opinion it looked like casting sand. Theres no way it could have got past the oil filter, through the oil cooler and in to the valley that holds the screen. I think it was there from the factory and when that screen let loose it went right to the IPR.

Wow, I just "glossed over" the casting sand in the oil statement.

Unless you had an oil coler failure, then sand should stay in the coolant. Even with an oil cooler failure, most of the time the oil will go into the coolant and not the other way.

The sand was all under the oil cooler and im 99% sure that the cooler has never been out of this motor. Just out of curiosity, how would that much sand get in that valley, im talking enough to fill the palm of your hand and every window on the screen was plugged except the one that was blew out.

If the sand is in your oil, I would think it is time for a new engine. It would have to be in everything.

Here is the oil flow path:

As long as the oil pressure is good, were gonna run it. But yes it did cross my mind about sand being everywhere in this motor.
