please help guys, my truck starts fine, but when i shift into drive and i press the gas the engine dies, if i put into reverse it works fine and the engine doesint die. just before this problem happened the od light was flashing so i disconnected the battery and put it back on and the od lights stop flashing.
What year is your Explorer, and which engine does it have? What happens if you shift the Drive and just hold the brake? Does the engine still stall, does it idle really roughly? What is the idle engine speed? When was the last tune up performed (spark plugs, plug wires, fuel filter, air filter)? What happens if you shift to neutral and provide some throttle? How about if you turn the A/C on with the engine idling in Park, any change in engine speed?
The more information you can provide to us, the better chance we'll have of helping you narrow this down. Do you have tools that will help with diagnostics such as a fuel pressure guage or a multi-meter?
the engine starts up fine and the idle is at right below the 1 mark and when i shift to drive with my foot still on the brake pedal the engine shuts off right away, i had a tune up just 6 months. when is on neutral it revs up fine and when i put it to reverse. car was running fine until this happened. the other day the od light was flashing and my car sounded like it was idleing ruff and i disconnected the battery and put it back on and od light stopped flashing. when im on park with ac on the idle is still fine.
So your A/C works, and when you're in park and turn the A/C on, the engine speed doesn't drop, it remains constant? This somewhat tests for the IAC servo, although since it doesn't stall when shifting to reverse it's probably not the problem.
You should also get the truck out of a garage and where there's nothing valuable in front of or behind it, chock the tires, then carefully shift from Park with your left foot firmly on the brake and the right foot on the throttle, shift to neutral, then give the engine a bit of throttle and shift to drive. Does the engine still stall or does it lunge? I'm with aquanaut, sounds a bit like the torque converter clutch is locked, but that isn't a real common issue with Fords.
95 explorer engine shuts off when i shift to drive
i had a mechanic look at myu truck and he said i need a new transmission and i just cant beleive it. Is there a way to know forsure my tranny is gone? before the problem my truck was running fine, no signs at all my tranny was going bad.
You should start by unplugging the torque converter clutch (TCC). I'm hoping it works like the GMs where when you unplug it, it unlocks. I don't have the manual for your model year though to tell you where to find the connector for the TCC.
To me is sounds like its trying to shift into drive and reverse, and thats why its stalling. It sounds more like a fluid flow problem, but in not a transmission person at all. Sound like something is stuck inside the transmission, maybe in the valve body. Try shifting it into low 1 and see what it does. Then if its ok then try driving it and shifting it like a standard and see what it does.... But, like I said, it sounds like its trying to go into 2 gears at the same time.
