Wait a minute, are you suggesting that you are only getting 8.6 mpg out of a V8 Explorer? How cold is it where you are doing this? I have a 2004 Mountaineer with the V8 and AWD and even pulling a 3800 lb camper, hauling two bicyles, two adults, two kids, a weekend's worth of luggage for the family, and accelerating pretty aggressively I still average over 12 mpg with a mix of city and highway driving.
This is just city driving. very short trip shorter then 1-2 mile. the engine is always cold. is not very cold here now about 42F. On highway my best milage is 21mpg
Ok here are the rules for the Highway race: We both drove to next town 20 miles away. We were gona try to be as close to 60 as posseble (no Cruze Control) and we drove to together v8 in front. and both push the reset button and the exactly the same spot when we had reached 60 and when we got ther on exactly same spot we wrote down the result.
Anyone want to predict the result??
I ride a 96 V6 4.0 city...hard stops and goes...gives me 15 MPG
18 or better hwy, I have noticed the ethenol fuel burns faster though... so I try to get pure gasoline
Ok now I have test the v8 in the BIG city of Reykjavík I drove it there for two days 70mile and the I got 14,7mpg. So driving here in my small town is not good for the milage..
I had a 98 Exp 4.0 SOHC 4wd and a 98 Exp 5.0 awd and now a 06 Exp 4.6 4wd and the latest gets the best mileage. I can avg 23-25 at 60 mph and it is bone stock and I use cruise control to keep the speed dead on. I think the 6 spd trans helps with the 3.55 gear ratio (compared to 3.73 on the 5.0).
I have always kept track of my mileage and over many, many satisfied years of driving I average 12-15 city and 18-28 highway (28 being the best). I have actually got 28mpg several times now and I think it has something to do with higher octane fuels. I usually run 87 octane, but have occasionally used 91 octane while on long trips. We always take the explorer when we go on vacation and usually drive three to five thousand miles in a two to three week period (up and down mountains). I maintain it myself and have always changed the oil and filters regulary. I have always used full synthetic 10w/30 oil and currently have 175K miles on it and have had very few problems.
The V8 mileage corresponds to my '02 after some 110,000 miles of keeping track of mpg. It gets better with a tailwind and worse with a head wind. Some trips up north seem to face a head wind both ways!!

Same with mine; a head wind can make a big difference. So, what is the mileage of your "02 V8?
Turning off Over-Drive on steep grades and while pulling or hauling heavy loads will save you fuel and is much easier on your engine... something to ponder.
