....could THIS happen. I've been picking up and driving older vehicles to run through the winter, keeping the Grand Marquis safe from all our road salt. I decided that this really wasn't practical, and since I needed a truck anyways, I'd pick up a Ranger in the fall and just keep it year-round. What's one more vehicle in the fleet, right? Of course, a customer yesterday trades in the EXACT truck I'm looking for (more about that later), about 6 months sooner than I really need it. I'm looking it over, and decide to ask the boss if I can drive it home and check it out. He says, "sure, just be careful." He just HAD to say that.....
I've got about a 30-mile ride home, I'm about 1/2 mile from the house and WACK!, Bambi jumps in front of the truck. Like I said, this could only happen to me. I'm in a COMPANY vehicle, on DEALER plates, and I have my first accident in 30 years of driving. Fortunately there was no sheet metal damage, BUT: the grille, the grille surround, the bumper, the lower valance with the fog lights- you get the idea. I quickly went from THINKING about buying the truck, to BUYING the truck. You know- "you broke it, you buy it." Oh yeah- there's one less deer we need to worry about starving to death this year.
So, my new truck is a '94 Ranger STX Supercab 4x4, 4.0 with a 5-speed stick. Got the sport buckets, CD player, and a uniquely-customized front end (for now). And it's Calypso Green- or should I say GREEN!!!!! You would have thought Bambi could see that color coming a mile away, and run in the opposite direction..........

Funny you should say that- I had 2 JD tractors and hated them. Both were nothing but trouble. I only ever used them as mowers, but replaced the last one (a 420) with a Ferris zero-turn commercial unit. Best mower I've ever had, and the service on it has been great!
So you're right- nothing runs like a Deere: everything else runs better!
Now that you've mentioned commercial lawn mowers, I must speak up
I've had a small landscaping business local, and I have a Scag commercial walk-behind in my "fleet". Best mower I've used. I've never owned/used a John Deere, but they are VERY expencive to use, and probably to mantain

Are you kidding? And hang around to wait for the sheriff to arrive? Then it goes against the dealership's insurance (remember, I was on a dealer plate). A neighbor came out and said he'd call the police for me (a requirement in NY). He knew I had to get outta there! Sorry, no venison for me this week. It was a young deer, probably would have been good eatin'. Oh well.....
now now.... gettin down on john deere's.... that's just not good..... i'm assuming that your 420 was a 50's 2 cyl "johnny putt putt", i've got a 56 420 crawler, and a 52 MT-W, both great tractors. ton's of pullin power
too bad to hear about your new truck..... tell them that you should get a good price on it, since it's all beat up?
I got tired of replacing parts on Craftsmans and Murrays, so I stepped up to a John Deere--Best I've owned. I don't know how a JD 420 could mess up other than bad maintenance, cause round here, they're just about the only thing pro-landscapers use, and they won't run anything but Deere. Another thing JD parts (on the rare occasion that you need them) are easier to find. We had an International 464 and every time something went bad on it, it was a 150 mile ride to the nearest dealership to get good parts. The local dealer had closed up shop 20 years before. Another thing a 420 has a Onan engine on it--not JD. So if you won't satisfied with the Onan, a Briggs and Stratton should have been capable of the job. Sorry you had a bad experience, but you are in the minority.
I guess you're to be congratulated on the new truck.
Thankful the deer stayed outside.
You are luckier than you might think on this one, had that guy gone over the hood instead of down the front you might have made your last post on this site.
Count your blessings.
Glad you're still here.

Last summer my dad and I were checking the fields after a hail storm, we were stopped on the road lookin out the drivers side when all of a sudden THUD!
I looked to the passenger side and I see this deer glued to my window and sliding down the door, like a cartoon. Did 1000 dollars damage to my ranger, that deer hit every panel on the right side of the truck....
