Hey guys Iam no t farmiliar with the 6.0's so I need a little help here .
I have a truck at work that makes a knocking noise when starting. It seems to me that it is taking a little longer to start so I think that is the noise Iam hearing. Does anyone have any ideas ?
Does it have a/m oil filter that may be letting the oil bleed back into the crankcase. A/M filters are a no-no on the 6.0 everywhere. Also are the oil change intervals at 5,000 miles or less?

I have heard of loose flywheel/flexplate bolts cause a knocking noise, and it may only occur on startup, as well as a cracked flexplate or loose bellhousing bolts causing misalignment of engine and transmission. I would get it checked out before something bad happens just to make sure. Could also be a starter engagement/disengagement problem.
None of this contributes to a long crank time before start, unless it coincidently happens to be making the knocking noise and have long crank times. I have seen rarer coincidental occurrences!
A/M is after market filters. Use only motorcraft or racor for the oil and fuel filters and Donaldson or motorcraft for air and Motorcraft or ntz for the tranny external filter.
Did you ever find the solution to this? I'm also getting a knocking noise on startup while cranking, but engine sounds fine at all RPMs after it's running. I'm thinking cracked flexplate or maybe the ring gear around the flexplate is cracked or broken. Will try to inspect this weekend, just not looking forward to pulling the trans since I just got the engine back in and cab back on. Thanks.
imo pull the starter. I would really suspect a bendix issue before a cracked flex plate. I have seen a few broken but not real common. when they do break its normally followed by knocking sound with the engine running.
but just a guess.
