I recently put headers on my truck. Its an 86 with a 302 EFI. If I stop at a stop light and wait for a minute or so at idle, when I go to take off the truck lags a little bit and then goes like normal. This only happens after it sits at idle for a little bit and go to take off. The truck didnt do this before I put the headers on it. When I put the headers on I put a new O2 sensor on it also. Is this just a result of a SD computer with these mods? It has true duals with glasspacks and no cats also. The truck runs great after that and esspecially when your getting on it a little bit it runs way better than before. Would a MAF conversion fix this?
Thanks
I've had headers on my 86 F150 EFI for 12 years without any issues. No cats, have bottle mufflers and a crossover pipe.
Have you tried pulling the battery cables off to reset the computer? It may have to "relearn" the 02 readings with the new sensor.
Wouldn't hurt to clean your throttle body out if you haven't recently. Sometimes that will clean up a lag off idle.
I also have TWO air filters on my truck. Kept the stock one, and noticed an 87 302 in the wrecker one day that had the air filter housing mounted behind drivers headlight. Got both installed with original hoses. Looks a little busy under the hood, but I have a very free flowing intake now. Most people think I have a slightly built 351 it goes so good now. ;-)
Do you have any kind of crossover pipe in your exhaust system? You only have one o2 sensor in your system, and it needs to be able to read the amount of unburned fuel in both cylinder banks in order to function properly. What Franklin said about disconnecting the battery is also important. When you do that, the ECU establishes a baseline on the new sensor, so that it compare it over time to the original spec. Header are no problem for speed density systems. Definitely check for codes, www.fordfuelinjection.com details how to do it.
Ok thanks, Ill look into the codes. Also my o2 sensor is in the collector of the header, how would I get the pipes to crossover to where the o2 sensor would get an accurate reading? Or would just ballancing the pressures make the difference? Thanks
