Even the stock tuning advances timing when oil temps are cold. Those with stock trucks that drive short distances often, or live in colder climates, will probably see these patterns more often.
Chips and tuners can advance timing as well, although most tunes I've seen are pretty moderate with their timing advance. In addition, most tunes leave the stock cold advance untouched.
Some folks may disagree with me (and that's fine), but I personally back down the timing advance table considerably in the tuning, especially on higher HP tunes. The result is a little more white smoke on cold starts, but I don't have that damn death rattle when the engine is cold either. Even in stock tuning, it rattles when temps are cold if that table is left alone. I hate it. I'd rather deal with a bit more white smoke for the first 2 minutes of driving, and have a nice quite engine that sounds like it's fully warmed up from the instant I start it.
