That has to be the worst looking thing I have seen!!

I bet that there are a lot of cooling passageways plugged up in that engine!

I wonder if the tech put in VC9 as an additive and didn't flush the cooling system.

Something is completely wrong with this picture.

looks like he had an oil cooler fail atone time not long ago, looks like it sent oil in to the cooling system and someone failed to flush it correctly

And he is probably not far from another oil cooler at a minimum.

I think if my filter came off looking like that, my truck would be parked till I could find out what the heck is going on. So, that is what oil in coolant might look like? I have never seen oil and coolant mixed before.

Which once again shows how important it is to go the distance and fix it right the first time. Cheaper in the end,not to mention minimizing frustration factor.

Oil in the coolant whips up into what looks like chocolate milkshake. The pic looks like a lot of rust and sludge to me!

First post here but someone linked my pick here so......anyway, hello

It really is a fine sand/dirt substance and I don't think there is any oil from what I can tell. I put a magnet to the gunk an it doesn't attract other than the stickyness of the goo, its all drying out now.

The whole story is......I bought the truck on condition that they (ford dealer) change all the main fluids and run a leak down to see if the HG was ok. In the process they found that the Oil/EGR cooler was clogged so they supposedly did the proper TSB to repair. Shortly after I put the filter on and this was my first change.
yeah I know
Truck seems to run ok, gauges are all within spec for a stock rig.

It still could be rust.

Fe(metal) +O2 => FeO (black) => + O2 => Fe2O3 (red)

So, iron rusts from Fe to Fe2O3 Ferric Oxide when completely oxidized. This "red rust" is only WEAKLY magnetic. It may not attract to a weak magnet, but will to a rare earth magnet.

However, when iron rusts, it does not go completely to Fe2O3 at first, it will go to FeO as an initial step. This form of rust is magnetic.

When you have a nail in water, it forms the FeO form of rust since there is not an adundance of oxygen. Essentially, the water isolates the iron from complete oxidation.

When you remove the nail from the water, it completes the reaction to Fe2O3 (exposure to air) and turns red.
