I recently purchased a 1998 Expedition 4.6 4x4 with 140k. About a month of driving it my OD light started to flash I had the code read and it came up with a 781 error, 2nd to 3rd shift issue. I dropped the pan last night first bad news was I found the dust plug in the pan (I'm thinking first oil change) second bad news I found what was left of a bearing stuck to the magnet.
Can anybody tell me what bearing this could be? Can it be repaired with out dropping the transmission? Or should I just suck it up and figure on a rebuild.
there are a lot of bearings in every tranny, the only way to replace them is to pull the tranny out & appart, sorry about the bad news,Gigger(the tranny man)
I knew this I was just hoping that somebody could give me a glimmer of hope. I had a feeling I was going to find something bad before I pulled the pan. I put a couple of pictures on my album if you can look at them. I'm new here so I don't know how it works if you can look at my album or not.
Finding the plug in the pan is not a good sign. It tells me that the trans has never been serviced as that plug is in the trans as the truck is being assembled and pushed into the pan as the dipstick tube is being installed. 140,000 without a service is well over the service life of the 4R70 trans under those conditions. From the look of the debris on the magnet I would say a complete rebuild will be needed. If you are a DIYer a reman trans from Ford will be your best bet when you consider the nationwide warrantee and the price. The trans will cost about $1450.00 w/exchange at your local Ford parts department.
My local trans shop quoted me $1,900 with a three warranty. Unfortunately I'm past the years of doing a trany myself. I'm drowning my sorrows with some ICE cold BUD.

That is a pretty good price, especially if it's a nationwide warrantee, which many shops can give through the association.
I got a little good news my payoff on my Expedition is $2,200. The car lot owner
Told me we will call it even if I take care of the trany and he'll send me the title.
That puts my cost for it at $2,500. It takes a little bit of the pain away not having to
Make anymore payments.

That is a real nice dealer! There are not many around that would do that for a customer. Is he your son or something?
You should post the name and address of that dealer here in a new thread, as he would likely sell a few more trucks to some of the members. We all like to deal with honest and fair people.
Good luck with your new transmission.

I will make sure I do this. He is just a small dealer, but the guy has real integrity.
He first sold us a 97 Blazer that he couldn't get running just right and it wasn't from trying.
When he couldn't get it he traded us the 98 Expedition. When I called him about
The trany he didn't hessitate to do something to make it right. All of this with
AS IS on the windows of his vehicals. I will start a new post. But his place is called
Estridge Auto in Grove City Ohio the owners name is Dan 614-274-2622.
He seems to be a right kind of person to deal with and I hope some of the members here that need a car or truck takes their business to him. He deserves to grow his business and prosper.
Yes he does deserve to grow. I first swa his add on Craigs list and I plan on posting his name anywhere I can to get him more buisness. I will post some pics of the Expedition here soon. Except for a few scratches on the passanger side door it is emaculate.
