I'm pretty certain that the ignition switch is just getting worn out and needs to be replaced. With the KOEO and the door open, I can wiggle the lock housing and sometimes it will ding, telling me I'm leaving my key in the ignition, sometimes it will not ding. Another issue is that I can have the lock housing in at least two different positions about 5 to 10 degrees apart from each other and still put the key in and start the truck. Sometimes it's hard to removed the key unless it's in the intended position, sometimes not.
To me, that's all pointing to a new ignition switch. One questions is do you think this could be something else? Also, how involved is the job of replacing the thing? Do I need to get a locksmith involved? Can I take the lock cylinder out of the old and put it in the new swith and still use my old keys? Please help.
Sounds more like the key cylinder. The contacts for the key-in gong are part of the lock cylinder assembly. My Bronco has been getting touchy about key-out, sometimes when I open the door it gongs, so I put the key back in and give it a little wiggle and it stops.
Sounds a lot like what's happening to me. I used to do just like you to try to get it to stop, then I figured out that I could just turn the housing slightly without the key in it to get it to stop. It's almost to the point that I want to unplug the gong until I get it all figured out.
It sounds like maybe I'm confusing the names of the parts here. LMC truck lists an "Ignition Cylinder W/keys" for my truck. The picture looks like what I think I'm having trouble with, basically the piece that you put the key into with the two little wings surrounding it, then you turn it to start the truck.
Anybody know how hard it is to replace that? It's only $20 so logic tells me that it will be a total PITA, lol.
If you find out how to change it let me know because a while ago I posted that I'm having problems with what I think is my ignition switch and no one gave me any help.
if you are referring to your 93, key cylinder replacement could be a 3 minute, or a 15 minute job.
look under the key cylinder. is there a little hole on the column??
if yes, all you need to do is push a 1/8 inch drill bit or equivelent up there with the key in the on position, then pull the cylinder out.
to install, press the pin up with the drill bit, put the key cylinder in, then turn to off position and remove the drill bit.
on some of the newer vehicles, you have to remove the bottom column cover to see the unlocking hole.
