Use Motorcraft or International filters ONLY!
Don't let it idle too much. If you must, kick it onto high idle of you have that option. There is a thread here somewhere on how to make it happen if you don't have that option. Don't let it sit without running for months at a time. Things start rusting up and you start having performance problems.
Starts like any other diesel in the winter. Keep it arm like your 7.3L They actually start quite well in the cold when the engine is strong and all the injectors are good, hence the choice of filters.
Synthetic or conventional, but synthetic tends to leak easier. Some people have cured excessive oil loss from switching to conventional. I don't see anything wrong with conventional. Synthetic works well in the winter though. 10 W-30 or 10W-40 in the winter, and if its REALLY hot in summer, I like the 15W-40 much better for a little added viscosity.
I would say 5000 miles is a good oil and filter change. I always change the fuel filter when I change the oil, but you can do every other oil change if you keep an eye on your fuel you put in it and drain the water from the filter housing from time to time.
And on a side note, install some gauges...fuel pressure is an important one to monitor. Run low fuel pressure and risk wearing out your injectors.
Besides that, maintenance and hard work is whats best for it!
