Question The new guy.

Long time lurker, first post, lots of questions. I have a 1996 F150 XLT 4X4, 302 motor, regular cab, long box. Love this truck, bought it 13 years ago, now has 180,000 miles, no real issues, until now. I fried the E4OD transmission pretty good.As i did not want to pay for a rebuild, i picked up a used E4OD that had been rebuilt about 30,000 miles ago, from what i was told came from a 1994 E150 Van. As transmissions are a new thing to me, i know nothing, i believed the 'gentleman' when he said that the 2 wheel drive was the same as the 4 wheel drive, all you do is change the rear housing, and fit my transfer case etc. Well you know the story, shafts are different, could not get the 'gentleman' to call me back etc. So i had someone change over the shafts for me. Got everything fitted to my truck, no problems, a pain, but no problems, till i went to hook up the shift solenoid connector, they looked the same, but are not. This guy had cut off the rear tabs to make it look like the one tab type. At first look they are almost identical, but does not fit tight. So i drop the pan, pull the pack out, and sure enough they are different part numbers, although that is not as important as having to be the correct solenoid. I ordered an early solenoid, which is totally different. I am at the point now that i really do not know what transmission i have?
The Ford part number that came from my truck is F5TP-7G391-AA, from the van? #E9TP-7G391-CA. I have added some picture to go with my novel, in the hopes some of you can help come up with a solution. I really do not want to pull the trans out again and start over, but.

Top is from my 96, F150.
Middle from 94 van?
Bottom, new.

From right to left, 96, 94 new, as you can see connector clips are not the same, the wall thickness on the new one, much thicker.
Is it as simple as buying a connector repair kit, and splice in? if so how?
This has been a real nightmare, any help will be very much appreciated.

Thanks in advance, Graham.

Welcome to the forum!

I feel the same way about my truck. I have owned it for 10 years. It has nearly 300,000 on it now.

I'm sorry, I don't know the answer to your question.

So the problem you have is that the solenoid pack connector in your donor trans doesn't match the connector on your truck? At a glance those parts physically look the same so couldn't you simply put the original pack from your truck into the van trans? If not then could your transfer the circuit board from your pickup solenoid to the van solenoid body?

I did hook up the origional solenoid from my 96, but the overdrive light was still flashing. From what i understand, these packs do not like to be overheated either.

There are diferences in the packs as far as how they communicate with the computer, the 89 - 94 are PWM, and the 95 and up are NON-PWM, there was also a Diode change for 95 and up. What exactly all this means, i am not sure, but from what i have been told, if you do not get the correct one, they will not communicate/function correctly, ie, if i require a solenoid that is PWM ( PULSE WITH MODULATION ) and install a non-pwm, they cant possibly work. I am so frustrated with this issue, it's just not funny anymore.

I knew there was a diode change on the 95 and up solenoid packs, they moved the protection diodes to the PCM. But I did not think they went to PWM until later when the 4R100 was introduced. Even then the first year or two it was non-PWM.

I would think if your ordered a new solenoid pack for your '96 application you should have gotten the correct one. All three definitely have different connectors that I was not aware of.

I think what i will do is return what i believe to be the 94 pack that was sent to me, and get the 96 pack. Assuming that the E4OD's all all the same in that year range, it should work. The original pack could have been heat damaged, that is why the o/d light was still flashing. Added a drain plug to the pan, just in case, saves a little mess.
