I have an issue with the E4OD in my motorhome for lack of a better word "hunting" at steady speed. Ok background info its is a 94 E350 7.5l Itasca motorhome. When I bought it the speedo was wonky and it wasnt shifting right. With the feedback from the guys in the van fourms figured out the VSS on the rear axle was possibly bad changed that, didnt help but I noticed the harness had been repaired. I redid the splices and problem was solved. This was July fast forward to late August I was on a trip and noticed that the speed would fall off 1-2mph on cruise and then recover I first thought it was wind buffeting as its as areodynamic as a box. Then tought it might be "missing out" so when I returned put new plugs, cap and rotor on it.
Didnt seem to help. I have no codes, no flash od light, engine runs strong I cannot hear any stutter or misfire in the engine but when you hold it at a steady speed either on cruise or manually its like you are hitting a deep puddle or headwind the other thing is its intermitant doesnt do it all of the time. So opinions would be welcome form reading on this forum maybe MLPS or TPS? Any feedback would be welcome
It's possible that the E4OD is starting it's decline towards a rebuild. That's how the E4OD in my F350 started to go. It lasted a few months like that, then it began to noticeably slip on shifting, then on acceleration, then refusal to work at all. The entire process took about a year. Now replacing my auto with a ZF5, and that's a whole 'nother story.
I was told by a trans re-build shop that E4ODs typically need a re-build every 5 years. That seems kinda ridiculous to me, and expensive.
There is a good chance that it is the MLPS. When the MLPS ages the internal resistance goes up and the PCM sees the increased resistance as the same thing as you moving the shifter to N. The PCM then does what it thinks you want and shifts the trans.
+1 for the MPLS. Mine did the same thing then failed completely. As far as the E4OD being a weak link, that may be true but with a quality rebuild kit, a SureCure from Sonnax and some reading and parts selection, it can be pretty darn tough. I've got 343,000 on mine and its going to get its second rebuild as soon as the parts all get here. I did the first overhaul at 150,000 and its been running ever since. This time its getting all the above mentioned and will be pretty stout.
Sorry it took so long to update this. I got the problem fixed then spaced this post. Ok turns out it was not the transmission, the engine computer was bad and killing power to the ingnition for a couple of seconds so what I felt as a surge like the transmission was hunting was the engine dying and starting back up. Anyway had to send mine out to be rebuilt, Runs and drives like a champ now.
Regards
Glad to hear it worked out. I had a similar problem with a 1990 Escort a long time ago. Darn new battery had a intermittent short in it that duplicated a bad tranny. I was lucky as the summer heat finally got that one. Intermittent electrical problems are the hardest to track down.
