The 351 is a small-block and the 390 is a FE. they don't mix! If you want to do the swap you will need a engine and tranny, or put in the same family block. "Classic Trucks" Dec. 02 has a great article on ford engines. Look it up or e-mail me directly and I will scan some of the info to you.

PM me.
I just swapped a '78 400/4speed for a '74 360 using the stock tranny.
I can maybe shed some light on this, shall we say, nightmare for you.
You will find that very few important things interchange between engine "families".

Can anyone tell me what it will take to swap a 351W out of a 79 F-150 4x4 to a 390.
Do you know for sure that really is a 351w and not a 351M ?
If you are sure its a windsor you will have to find out what it takes to put an FE in there.
The fact that the 360 was widely used it shouldn't be much od a problem.
You can check in this forum for swapping in a 360 .
You will need mounting towers from a 1976 1/2 ton 4x4. Bell housing if you are using a c4 or 4speed. New tranny if youre using a c6. I dont think any of the acessory brackets will fit the 390, but the acessories will. You may have to slide your tranny and transfer case forewards or back in their slotted holes. You may need to relocate your oil filter, or get a FL300 filter.
If i think of anything else, ill post here.
