351w or 390

hey guys. I want some input on pros and cons of running a 351w or a 390.

the reason i ask is because i was originally a 351w stroker build, but I found a 390/c4 combo for $1000.

I want to compare:

Weight:
Block strength:
Cost to build and upgrade:
Parts market available:
EXT:

This will be going in a 56 F100.
I will be swapping the c4 for a 5 or 6 speed trans so don't really look at that.

I don't know much about the motor. it could be 2 or 4 valve?

Thanks.

Also what kind of power can i safely make from a mild build 390 and what about stroking a 390? what can i get then?

Stephen

I can't help you with the 390 but the 351w has massive aftermarket support and the block will safely handle 400-750hp depending upon the rotating assembly.. from stock to a forged and balanced aftermarket assembly.

390s are great motors, but the aftermarket is spendy.

i would go stroker 5.8. the 390 is also a larger motor so your not only adding weight but will also fill up that engine bay.

IIRC, the way the block is cast you can't do much in the way of stroking on a 390. It's from the 427/428 engine family (i.e. heads will interchange). It will be a lot heavier, possibly stronger if you have it crossbolted. The only ones I've ever seen are in Mustangs and Fairlanes, etc with an occasional truck.

390 is cool for the uniqueness factor, especially in a '56, but how much you have to spend depends on what you're expecting to do with the truck once it's done.

I would go with the 351W, but be advised, a 390 with a .030 overbore and an aftermarket stroker goes to 445, and make'em heap big torque and HP.
