If it was me, I'd find a local electrician so HE could tell me to run at least 12 gauge wire for a 20 amp circuit. He could also probably tell me anything else special I might need to know, like the code and permits, ect. I might also find out at the same time how reasonable it is for him to do the job if I do most of the prep work.

I had an electrician do mine. He ran one wire bundle into a sub panel, then split it for 220V for the welder, and 110V for everything else. It looked, and worked great when it was done, and I know it's done right (read safe).

It's not that tough to do safe wiring. But if ya gotta ask a question like "which gauge", you need an electrician. I'm not slammin' you, but you gotta have some knowledge of electrical codes and safe practices before you add circuits.

What i would do is bury at least a 1 inch pvc conduit for power to a sub panel and a 3/4 inch pvc conduit for phone and cable ect. even if you dont need it now at least you can add more later. If your not sure how to do the work hire it done. You can probaly save some money by checking the codes and installing the underground conduit yourself

I would really hire an electrician to do this, it’s not worth getting electrocuted. He will probably recommend running 240V to a 60 amp GFCI subpanel in the garage and then branch off from it. Then you will have plenty of power for your tools, lights, compressor and welder.

Figure out the length of wire you need from House to garage first.

As luck may have it, I am an Electrician by trade. I would actually do what tumbleweed said. If you can, run a 1" pvc conduit to the garage. Pick up some #6 awg NMWU lumex wire long enough to suit your needs. LB it into your house, LB it into your garage and right into a 60 amp or bigger 12 cct or more panel. Feed it from your house panel with a 60amp 2 pole breaker. Get an electrician to check it out(to be safe). Then you got a 60 amp service in your garage. If you can't do that, make sure you run at least #12awg wire to what you want to do...
