Anyone have experience changing coil springs?

I have a 91 f-150 300 6cyl, 5 speed, 4x4
when I got the truck it rode pretty low in the front and the origianal owner put in spring spacers.
since then my brother gave me his front bumper, plow, front coils, and airbags off his 84.
The bumper and plow are pretty heavy, when I put them on I also installed the coils and airbags and new shocks. I have the air bags set at 30 psi.

The front rides really low. The other day I was under it an noticed that there is only a couple inches from the axle to the bump stops.

I was thinking about getting springs for a f250 or even an f350 to help with the added weight.

Can this be done?
What would the best spring be to bring it up and be stout again?

I am not to worried about ride quality as long as its safe. I like when trucks ride like trucks!!

f250 springs should be perfect. It's an easy change. You just need to jack up the truck by the frame so there is no weight on the axle. Take the nuts off the shocks, and remove the calipers. After that, take the retaining clip off of the spring, and the cut off of the inside of the spring (the right tools help a lot). Then the spring should pull right out.

This pics makes it seem more complicated than it really is.

Yeah I think the fact that your current springs are of the '84 vintage is why your truck is so weak in the front. Like Skyfox said a brand new set of f250 springs so do the trick. But there are 2 different spring rates for the f250. You'll have to do a search on here or maybe someone that knows the 2 can chime in. Good luck.

E250 springs are supposed to be the way to go on plow trucks.....the spring rate is higher because of the weight of the engine directly over them.

So I can just get 3/4 ton van springs?

What is the best spring weight I can use? I want to go with the highest possible.

Easiest way to find heavy springs is to go walk through your local bone yard, and check weight ratings for the various trucks stacked out there. Trucks with a diesel will have the heaviest weight rating & spring rate, a 460 is close behind that.

We put a set of coils from a 460 powered F250 under my brother's 300 powered F100, and gained almost 3" of lift, and a LOT more weight carrying capacity.

Thanks guys, I talked to the local auto parts store this afternoon.
They have the same part number for front coils for all F250 and E250's

I guess I will go with them

Just make sure you order for the heaviest GVWR you can order for, or else you aren't going to make any gains on your weight handling capabilities
