If your towing at 75mph on windy days please tell us, we'll know to stay home that day so you dont kill any of us.
You must not live west of the Mississippi, interstate speed limits are 75mph. The wind tends to blow pretty good across the western plains on a regular basis.
That is a true statement and it will definatley save you some greenbacks, however your overall performance of swapping to lower a gear set will do a lot more for your towing than just locking the overdrive out. I can move a load up to speed faster with less throttle input, with the 3.73 rear end and my taller tires it was a little doggy from a stop. All about what you want and are willing to spend I suppose.
If I were going to spend $2k, it would be the down payment on a truck desinged to tow the load I wanted to tow properly. I do not think it is wise to push a 1/2 ton truck with regards to towing. The gearing is just one small facet. The brakes need an upgrade. Tires need an upgrade. Suspension needs an upgrade. Mirros need an upgrade. By the time you upgrade an F150 to actually tow well, you might as well have bought a truck that comes with all of the upgraded equipment already. Just my 2 cents.
If I were intending to use the truck off-road and wanted to fit large tires I would change gears to compensate.

As long as you are towing within the OEM tow/GCWR ratings you shouldn't need to upgrade the brakes/suspension. I think basecamps interest is better pulling capability, not how the truck is handling or braking...I agree doing gears is spendy but as I said before it's all about what you want and are willing to spend....I WANT a new 2011 SUPERDUTY with the 6.7 but can't swallow the 50K+ price! Ahh one can dream!

It's the speed limit, not the speed minimum. Just sayin...
To the OP, I have a truck with 4.56 gears and 30" tires and I love it. Now I'm prob going to regear my van with 4.56's and 30" tires. These 5.4's make torque way too high in the rpm range for the stock crappy gearing.

Check your facts. The 5.4L makes more low end torque for an engine its size than the competition. 350 lb/ft at 2500 rpm is high in the rev range?
If the speed scares you, maybe it is best that you stay home, just sayin...
My van is a '98 and apparently makes 335 @ 3000. Lower gears will give you better acceleration and allow you to use overdrive on the highway while towing. Plus, the truck won't have to downshift at every slight grade the comes up. And yes, I know there's CONS too. They cost a good bit of money, tough to install, sacrifice a mile or two per gallon on the highway, more wear and tear on some other parts, higher driveshaft speed, etc...
