I just bought a 2000 Ranger 4.oL 4x4 auto transmission. Is giving me like 13.64 mi/gal. I find that kind of low even in the city for a V6 engine. it rides niece and smooth but with todays gas prices i am not happy with the purchase. if anybody has a tip let me know. by the way is my first Ford.
Almost 14 MPG isn't really out of the ballpark for your setup. You didn't say, but chances are you've got 4.10 gears in the rear which doesn't equal good gas mileage. Still, you should check all the obvious stuff like air filter, tire pressure, etc... and maybe run some fuel injector cleaner through it.
my 02 gets around 12-15 avg city/hwy main culprit it how you accelerate and how fast you drive but like the above suggestions check them and also make sure to change your oil regularly
i can drive and get 12mpg my gf can drive and get 15mpg i have a heavy foort and can expext bad milage well hope this helps

Yep.... 14.8 MPG average for me too. Welcome to the group of unhappy people who bought a Ranger because they expected better gas mileage!
My next truck will be either a diesel, or a Toyota (ONLY because they offer the 4-cylinder engine with 4-wheel-drive and a manual transmission). I WISH Ford still offered 4x4 Rangers with the 4-cylinder/manual tranny setup.
my ranger gets crappy gas mileage too, but i plan on getting a cold air intake. i know that a cold air intake will give me more power, but is it going to give me that much better mileage?
I hate to point out the obvious, but the window sticker on the 4.0 does state 14 city, 16 highway (or is it 13/15?). It does sound crappy though, especially compared to those older 4.0 trucks getting better mileage. I usually see @ 15 mpg, but I drive like an old lady (my wife, on the other hand, isn't happy unless she hears the tires squeal!)
I've been thinking about getting one of the Diablo chips. Anyone know if they really make a difference?
The sticker says 15c-18highway.
for the 2002 ranger xlt 4.0 4x4.. extended cab automatic
the 2002 3.0 was 17-20.. i think. 4x4 standard cab automatic
Winter ==crappy gas.. warmup times.. etc
and the epa ratings are horrid.. city driving is basically a dynometer running at 20mph.
highway is like 48mph. what does that do to similate driving cycles..not much.
