Swapping Speedometers

Guys,

I am in the process of refreshing my newly purchased 93 Flareside. I have a gauge cluster from a 95 Lightning which I intend on installing in this truck. I have done a little research on this forum and know that you can't just install a 95 cluster in a 93 without issues. So, I tore down both clusters and plan on installing just the speed/tachometers into the 93 case.

My question is: where is the odometer mileage kept on/in the PSOM and how can I remove it to install on the L speedometer? I wish to keep the original mileage of the Flareside with the truck.

Scott

Sure you can, it is keep in the PSOM. Just put you old PSOM in the set up you are going to use.

But I do not think you can do what else you are talking about as I do not think the parts will swap from a cluster non-tach cluster to a tach cluster. The gauges have to plug into the sockets in cluster housing.

Do NOT do as advised. I tried that and had bad results. The Lightning PSOM will put the needle where it thinks it should be and that is NOT where it will be on the gauge.

A few questions:

Does the original odometer have more mileage than the Lightning odometer?

Does your original cluster have a Tachometer?

Do you have the same tire size and gear ratio as the Lightning that the cluster came out of?

I can help you with this swap as I have done it with my '96. I now have the cluster out of a '96 Mustang GT in my truck. You can use the cluster out of the lightning but you may have to pull the bulb for the ABS light. It stayed on constantly on mine. Very annoying. I fixed that problem the right way though.

Jarod17,

Thanks for the response.

Flareside has 203K and the L shows 119K.
No, the Flareside did not have a tach.
Tire size is different.
Flareside has a 3.55 and the L came with a 4.10.

Thanks, Scott

OK, Not having the tach you will need to find a whole cluster with tach to do this properly. I have two for sale but one is out of a '96 and the other is out of a lightning. From my understanding neither will work for you due to ABS differences unfortunately. This is a plug and play swap fortunately. Well, as far as installation goes anyway There is a thread hear somewhere that tells how to reprogram for the tire size/gear ratio difference. I will try to find it on my days off.

With your tire and gear difference your speedometer should read approx. 10% fast. So if your speedometer reads 66 mph you will actually be going 60 mph. I had about the same tire/gear ratio difference that you have. Good luck with your search and I will get back with you as soon as I find the thread for reprogramming the PSOM.

Don't mean to high jack the thread, but I 'm looking at doing a swap in the next week. I have a '95 with no tach and unoperable oil pressure gauge and I want to swap in a cluster with a tach and operational gauge. Should this be plug and play? How difficult is swapping in the PSOM? Also, does the year of cluster make any difference?

73FOMO,
You need a cluster from a 1994 or 1995 F-series or Bronco and it would be plug and play.
You can leave the PSOM attached to your old speedometer head and just put it in the new cluster. Both gauge panels on the left and right of the speedometer head have to be lifted out before the speedometer head comes out.
To get the panels out remove the plastic front covers (both of them).

Cool...so nothing newer than 94 or nothing later than 95 would work?

Yes that is true for plug and play.
If you put in a 92 or 93 then the alternator will not charge without swaping wires in the two large plugs on the back of the cluster.

So....it's just not plug and play, but would work. The cluster I had my eyes on actually is a '93. What wire's specifically have to be swapped?

I found out it is actually a '94 cluster instead of a '93 so it should be plug n play. Cool.

OK, as promised I found the page with info on recalibrating the PSOM here: HOW TO RECALIBRATE THE SPEEDOMETER ON 92-96 FORD F-SERIES AND BRONCO .: Articles

A thread that got me started was this one: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/8...ster-swap.html

After rereading the thread it may appear that I may have been an anomily for the PSOM not interchanging properly. Good luck with your swap.

Also, Check out Frederick's clusterswap in the last link. Frederick was the insperation behind my Mustang swap.
