New to forum

Hey everyone I am new to the forum. Just bought a 2000 Excursion 4x4 Limited with 145000 on it. So far we LOVE it. I did notice something this weekend that im sure was there when we test drove it originally but didn't hear. There is some "thumping" coming from underneath the front to middle of the vehicle when we drive over slightly rough roads. It is not noticeable on the hwy. Only at lower speeds. Im thinking tie-rods? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Thanks in advance

Glen

My guess...sway bar bushing...especially on a vehicle with 10 years on the clock...

WELCOME to the forums!...it is a great place to meet like minded folks with mostly open attitudes!...what motor did you get?

Joe.

Thanks for the Welcome Joe!! How do I check the sway bar bushings?

The truck has the 6.8 V-10. Everything is stock except the tires which I found out today are actually to small for the vehicle. They are 245's the door says it should be 265

Those 245 are about the same height as the 265s. They are also E-rated...or should be. I wouldn't be in too much of a hurry to change them. Even though they look kinda silly, they actually turn the truck into a rocket (comparatively) and will net you a bit better mileage.

Really? I thought it would actually be just the opposite with a slightly undersized tire.

I did notice another issue this morning. One that I am more concerned with. I heard a knocking in the engine this morning as it was warming up. By the time I got to work it was still there just not as noticeable. Thankfully I have a warranty on it and will get it looked at as soon as possible

Welcome to FTE!

I agree with Joe, check the sway bar bushings first.

Here is a good link with pictures of the front sway bar!

Thanks for the pictures. This definitely looks and sounds like what might be my problem. And it looks like something I might be able to do myself. What was the total cost of the kit?

If memory serves me, somewhere around $50 for the urethane kit, but that was a couple of years ago too!

Nah....not as soft and not as wide as a 265. Depending on the brand...

Well, since i can't hear th actual knock...one thing I would do is look underneath and make sure the engine is wearing a Motorcraft filter. If it has a Fram, change it out. They can induce valvetrain noises at start up.

Check those bushings. I's fairly common. So is the cab mount but I'd start with the bushings.

I have the same vehicle (year, engine, miles). Bought mine in June and drove with the rattle in the front for 2 months while I chased down other issues. But the rattle was driving me nuts. I finally crawled under it a couple of weeks ago and changed out the sway bar bushings and end links. It took me two hours, and size 13, 15 & 18 mm wrenches.

The bushing that attach to the front axle are cheap ($12). But you also need to change the end links. You can go the route of removing the end links, press out the old bushings and pressing in new ones....but obviously it requires access to a press. I didn't, so I just bought the replacement end links from Moog ($81 each at Advance Auto...but you can probably do better via internet.)

The change in the quality of the ride was so dramatic that I wish I had done that first. So I would echo the earlier posts and start there. Its a quick and relatively inexpensive fix.

Thanks EVERYONE. As soon as we dry up around here I will get under there and check things out. I have a newbie question and that is regarding the 4x4. It looks like I have manual hubs. But there are no markings showing locked or unlocked. Are these just for looks or do the hubs have to be manually engaged?
