Okay, I posted in an earlier thread but did not list it as problems. I am having problems with a fluid change on the old 7.3l PSD and the 4R100 transmission. I have two coolers in line on this setup. The stock and I think it is called a transcool cooler for the other. This was recommended by Ford over 130,000 miles ago when then replaced the original tranny. I have drained the pan, dropped changed the filter, reinstalled the pan and filled with 7 quarts. I then hooked up a clear tube to the rear cooler line on the transmission. I had the wife start the truck and begin running it through the gears and the dang thing almost immediately started spitting tranny fluid out of the transmission instead of through the cooler line. Question: Do you think my cooler/coolers or lines are plugged? If so, what should I do? Hook up a air compressor and run a low pressure push through the cooler lines once they are disconnected from the transmission? I might just do that anyway and see if it is blockage in the cooler lines.
I just did a tranny & cooler flush myself & ran into some problems. They aren't the same issues you are having though, but I did flush my cooler with air & brake fluid (as instructed by Brian at BTS) I however only have the stock cooler on my truck.. I wish I could find it, but I can't. Frank (Franko72) posted an excellent write up on checking the flows of the lines/coolers.. I searched through a couple tranny posts, but I couldn't find it
I ended up changing the fluid in the pan and blowing out the cooler lines. Changed only about 10 quarts of fluid. I will run this for a while and keep an eye on fluid level, temp, and smell. I was able to blow the cooler lines out fairly easily. I drove it today and it is shifting fine, with no slipping. I appreciate the assist.
I would guess that the pan was slightly overfilled. Try it again & see what happens. When I did mine, I ended up with too much in the pan & it blew out the return line hole all over my driveway...
