ok guys, I have been thinking of rebuilding my girls engine (course knowing me.. it will be in like 3 years) and I am reading up on electric water pumps. From what I have read they seem to be fairly straightforward and simple. Along with all the benefits it seems like it would help the engine, even a daily driver, and take off alot of stress.
The only down side I see is the wiring/ amp pulling from the start up. I figure going with an alternator bigger than 60amps.. say 100 would be more than enough to compensate for it and ac, improved headlights, and some radio upgrades.
tell me if I am over thinking this or if it sounds realistic.
I wouldn't for a daily driver. Race cars use these because they are only run for a few minutes at a time, and not every day of the week. A mechanical pump is tons more reliable and doesn't take that much power to run anyhow. The better way to cut down on parasitic drag is to get an electric fan, I recommend one out of a mid 90's Ford Taurus or Dodge Durango, both of these fans put out a high CFM that works great for a truck.
I'd definitely consider it as the electronics can be set up to have variable speed to the pump depending on water temp. They can also be set to keep running after shutdown until the water in the system has cooled down a bit (coupled with an electric fan of course).
My only concern would be that the water pump and the alternator are usually hooked up on the same belt, so if you do away with the water pump you have to hook up the alternator some other way.
