Leak between tranny and transfer case

I apologize in advance for my limited knowledge. I tried to search but didnt know what i was actually searching for, so here goes. My truck is an automatic with a c6 and a 205 transfer case. There is a "thing" that is bolted to the back of the tranny, and it then bolts to the front side of the transfer case. Im leaking transmission fluid out of the seal between the "thing" and the transfer case. My girl friends dad said he thought that the "thing" wasnt supposed to be full of fluid and my rear transmission seal could be out. So i hope that maybe one of you understand what i mean, i should have taken a photo of it today. So on to my question. If this was your vehicle, what would you assume the problem is? and how would you fix it? I put some gasket sealer around the edge to seal it from leaking all over my parking spot, but it is only a temporary fix.
Thank you for bearing with me

I've only had my t-case out once and it's been quite a while, and it was due to the leak you described. There is a gasket between it and the C6, and the connection is wet. Bad gasket= leak. I had leaks there, pan gasket, and the side cover on the 205. Luckily, it's been dry for years after that fix. Not a fun job.

My '77 351M / C-6 / NP 205 has had that leak for at least 15 years, maybe longer. I add a quart of fluid to the transmission maybe once every 10-15,000 miles and drain / change the TC's oil. Trans fluid will dilute TC oil making it thinner and it will find leaks in the covers.

Piece between the C-6 and NP205 is simply an adapter housing. It took the place of the normal tailshaft housing.

Oh ok, so is there supposed to be fluid in the adapter? Does anyone know of a write up that i could read on fixing this leak?

Thank you guys for being so patient with me on while learning what some of this stuff is on my truck!
