Whats with this ScanGauge II ?
It advertizes as a scanner plus gauges etc.
any one try one out. Does it do what it says and it sit useful.
Seems pretty inexpensive. Cheaper than a set of gauges.
What is the story?

Works great if you only want to watch ECT and EOT, and maybe the transmission, but you will need analog gauges for some other very important things to watch. The display is much simpler than costlier units, thats why I went with the Edge Insight CTS, because it has an LCD color touch screen. It IS programable to watch some pretty random stuff, that could come in really handy for troubleshooting engine problems.

I like it. I use it to watch the water temp (and the transmission fluid temp when I had an automatic vehicle). It's a great way to also watch what's going on with your mileage and to log trips and mileage.
Although the Scan Guage can only tell you what the computer is seeing from various sensors, it seems much more sensitive than the factory coolant temp gauge, for example. Sometimes when I'm wheelin' my truck pretty hard in 4 Low out in the brush, the water temp gauge reads in it's normal position, but the Scan Guage is already showing temps around 215F, which is about 20 degrees hotter than it runs just cruising down the road. The same was true with my automatic transmission. When I'm horsing around and see temps start creeping up like that, I can back off before things start really getting warm.
Here's a pic of what I am talking about when I had it mounted in my Ranger. The engine water temp was at 229, but the factory gauge was barely above normal.
And here's where I have it in my F250. Notice how little fuel you burn idling- just over a half gallon per HOUR! Much less than I thought!

I like my Scanguage II because it is smaller and tucks away nicely in a little hole just in front of my shifter.
The trip computer is also great. And if you loan your vehicle to someone or have a teenager, you can always go in and look up top speed, max water temp, and miles driven, etc for that day.
But I am thinking of buying an attachment to my Garmin GPS that does the same thing. Nice screen, lots of options, just not sure about the trip computer.
