So if anyone wonders how an all wheel drive is supposed to work it pretty simple it has a viscous clutch that should allow slipping so you dont have binding at low speeds on pavement. No binding at all it should feel just like a car feels on pavement. I know this because i just rebuilt my Mountaineer transfer case and its awesome. When i bought I never had an awd so I thought the binding was normal. since 4X4s bind. The rebuild is pretty simple anyone with a little mechanical skill could do it. From what I know now i think if your just doing a chain and clutch you can probably do it with out removing from car if you can get the cases to split.
I'm just getting ready to check mine out to see if it is what's binding or if I have air in my PS pump. I'm pretty sure its the VCU. Where did you find the rebuild parts? I'll start by just changing the fluid but suspect it will require more work.
if your asking me yes i changed the clutch and with a wrench on the drive shaft i could make the new one slip so i was happy with to know that as i was putting it back together

Glad to know that. I'm going to check the clutch in my case now as that may also be my problem.
I looked at the site you listed and can find no reference to t/cases except for a listing of the chains they have available. Can you clarify how to get more info on the t/case parts from them?
Thanks, Mel
