Hi everyone. I'm new here and need some help. I have a 1997 Explorer 4WD with an automatic transmission which I purchased used. I recently had a grinding sound when I decelerated. Took it to a shop and was told I needed a new transfer case. Fine. $2,000 later, the grinding is gone, but when I go into a slow sharp turn, in 2WD, it feels like it is binding, just like if I went into a sharp turn in 4WD on dry pavement. Guy at the shop assures me this is normal, because the old transfer case was worn out so I wouldn't have felt the binding and there is a "breaking in period." I talked to a Ford Dealer mechanic who said it shouldn't bind at all in 2WD.
Not having owned a new Ford Explorer, I wouldn't know if it is supposed to bind with a new transfer case or not. Anyone know if the guy who put in the new transfer case is full of it or not?

is it sharp turns? does this model have 2H,4H,4L OR 4AUTO, 4HL, 4L?
If it has 4auto and no 2H its normal, BUT if has 2H and your in 2H the tansfer case is not coming unlocked if you feel binding. Need more info on what you have. Is the 4x4 light on or off? does it shift to 4h when you switch it? does the light come on then? If all lights are working properly then shift motor and module are working properly and problem is in T/C. Give me some more info after you run these tests.
