Tranny Leak Question

4x4 with C6 Auto leaks from inspection plate on front of bell housing cover after truck is parked for awhile. I figure the input shaft seal is leaking. The transmission shop says they refuse to do anything less than a complete rebuild because the seal alone won't guarantee to stop the leak. The transmission works fine. Is this for real?

Yes it is. Transmission shops don't want to spend their time on small projects like yours. They cost little but take enough time that it's not an efficient use of their money.

I would suggest getting a product similar to "Stop Leak". You simply just pour it into your transmission and it will help re-seal any leaking problems you're having.

If you don't want to pay the $700-800 to get your tranmission completely rebuilt, it's at least worth trying a re-sealer for $11.00 and seeing if that works first.

I would actually highly suggest it since your transmission is working just fine. It's just a seal, all you need to do is stop the leaking... It's that simple.

Thanks for the advice Aaron. I'll give it a try. But this thing leaves a pretty good size puddle after the transmission cools.

If I tried to replace the transmission with a used one I wonder if any C6 would be compatible?

That's a gamble. Even with a know compatable tranny, if it hasn't been rebuilt, it maybe in just as bad a shape as yours.

I wouldn't use a stop leak product unless you are just buying some time until you rebuild the tranny. They swell the seals and if it's losing as much fluid as you say, it may not swell it enough. Lucas is a good brand.

I agree totally on both counts. The transmission you replace this one with could be just as bad or worse. If the trans is leaving that big of a puddle the only thing that will stop the leak is seal replacement. Stop leak isn't going to cut it (assuming it's a good sized puddle)
If you can swing a few wrenches it really is a job you can do at home. Don't be intimidated because it's a transmission. Get a good manual, take your time and make sure your work area is super clean. These C6 units are pretty basic when you break them down.

This is something you can fix! It will only cost you the price of a manual (if you don't have one already), a seal and your time.

Thanks for all the advice. The transmission guy rattled off about four different things beyond the seal that it could be; which makes me nervous. I did find a used C6 on craigslist that came from a '79 Ford with a 400. Would that transmission bolt into a '73 4X4 with a 360?

Hopefully somebody here can help you out with that one. I'm in the dark when it comes to the 360's. I can only guess it would be an FE style bellhousing for the 360 and it's different than the 400, but's it's only a guess.

There's alot of guys on here that will know that answer right off the top.

Take it apart and put a new seal in it, you don't need them.

I replaced the front seal on my C4 when I had the motor out and it was a piece of cake. Really, I think a third grader could have done it....or even a cave man!!!

NO.

Only a C6 from an FE motor, and a 4x4 model to start with. Converting a 2wd model to 4x4 requires a complete teardown.

IMO don't buy a used trans to fix this problem. Who knows what history it has and what problems it will cause.

--option 1, as suggested, pull it and replace the seal

--option 2, keep shopping for a reasonable reman job.

--option 3, kitty litter.

I've been looking for another C6 for an FE with 4x4, which is proving difficult. I'm thinking of purchasing a junk FE C6 (with whatever output shaft) and tearing it apart with a rebuild guide to figure out how it would go. Once I have everything figured out I'll remove the trans from my truck, pull the output shaft and married transfer case that I need and complete the rebuild.
I know it will be some extra work and $. But, I don't want to disable my truck and blindly tear apart my transmission. At least if I give up and abandon the project I'm only out the extra tranny.

Yup. FE's have a bolt pattern all their own. And you would have to get 1 from a 4x4, as stated above. I vote for drop the tranny and replace the seal, since you say the transmission is fine. Its common for that to happen, especially if its never been replaced, or after sitting for years without driving

Mine 1979 f250 4x4 with a c6 has been doing the same thing. I just topped it up with Lucas a couple of weeks ago and it has really slowed the leak way down.
