I recently purchased a 1996 f350 crew with auto tranny. The truck only shows 118k on the odo, and has been very well kept. The problem, or so I think, the truck starts fine and idle as as I would expect, normal, but under normal, or even hard acceleration it is very sluggish, as if it is starvin for fuel. I have not yet checked the fuel filter, but will today. Oil has been changed, or so I have been told. No smoke that I have seen, so I'm thinkin turbo is fine, but I cant hear the turbo much either. The truck is bone stock just like it came from the factory. I'm thinkin HPOP, possibly. Any help would be appreciated.
Change the fuel filter, clean the FPR screen and go from there. The turbo doesn't sing on these trucks like it does in the SD's. It wouldn't hurt to check the turbo for play just so you know if its okay or not.
Is yours a CA emissions model?
No, just a regular ol Texas truck. I am used to my 2000 SD, and the way it runs, but even at that this thing is sick.
Its gonna feel sick! For one, your SD had 140cc injectors and your 96 has 90cc injectors. If your truck was a CA emissions like mine it would have 120cc injectors and wouldn't feel quite as anemic.
Another big difference is the turbo- your SD had an 0.84 A/R wastegated exhaust housing that would spool up real quick where the OBS has a 1.15 A/R non-wastegated housing that takes longer to spool up.
Even though my OBS is basically the same motor wise as my early 99 was it still feels low on power compared to my SD. If you have AutoEnginuity or know someone that does run some tests on it and see how things look. I'm guessing it's probably fine unfortunately. Time to break out your wallet to make that truck run! Make sure to do all the usual stuff first of course, such as fuel filter change, clean air filter, etc etc.
When I first got my truck I could not hear the turbo as well. As stock it should get up and go pretty good when you get into it unless something is wrong. Check the simple things first as fuel pressure and fuel filter screen. Also one often overlooked item is the MAP sensor hose. They get very brittle where it connects to the intake. Also the hose can get clogged up causing the MAP not to see boost, that was my problem. So take it off and blow in one end to clear anything clogged in there, check for overall quality such as cracking .. etc. Also you can unplug the MAP sensor electrical connection and take it for a spin. The CEL light will come on but won't hurt anything. If it runs much better then either the hose is clogged/leaking or the MAP sensor itself could be bad. Doing the 6637 mod in itself will enable you to hear the turbo spool much better and down pipe and cat delete helps even more.
Thanx much for the input. I understand that the truck will not run like my SD, mostly because it has stage ones, intake, exhaust, and DP tuner. But, I owned a 95 OBS and it ran much better than this 96. I just can't help but think there is a problem else where, i could be wrong, but i don't think so. Like I say I will change the filter, and check the housing, and also check the map sensor.
I do plan on adding aftermarket parts to this truck as well, its just gonna cost a bit more than I expected. Cooler, injectors, hpop, exhaust, tuner, intake, i just stinks that its kindof hard to do one without the other, especially if it is used to do towing, but I am prolly wrong about that too. Just throwin this out there to get some feed back for those of you who have more experience with this OBS.
Jim makes a good point too... the stock down pipe on the OBS leaves a lot to be desired and doesn't do good things for the performance of the rig. Check the ICP PSI and duty cycle with a scanner to see if your HPO system is up to snuff.
You can do your mods in stages, no need to hit it all at once. It sounds like you know the drill, but don't forget gauges to keep an eye on things.
Ya, forgot about guages. I know this will prolly stir up a hornets nest, but its almost (cost wise) cheaper to find an 12v Cummins an drop in there. But I'm a Ford guy, and International is apart of that.

I understand your frustration. On the other hand you can take advice from here or go in another direction. If you really think there is a problem elsewhere then go for it. Unplugging the MAP or checking the hose is zero $ troubleshooting. Checking the fuel filter screen is zero $ troubleshooting. It's your call ..
