Thinkin about a Turbo-setup

I have a 1978 F100 with a 351-w and c-4.
I've been thinkin bout putting a turbo setup on it somewhere down the road... I have the oppurtunity to buy a used Garret T25 Turbo with a wastegate and intercooler (no blow off valve) for $250 (seems a bit high to me)
What I want to know, is this a good turbo for my motor, how would I go about plumbin it in, and how much would be a good price for the turbo?

I've been researching turbos for a 300 project. From what I've learned, that turbo would be way too small for your application. This site will help you in narrowing down what you need:

Squirrel Performance

There are a ton of variables in picking the correct turbo, though. Such questions as are you after low-end torque for towing, or are you building something to run at a drag track? Will it be a daily-driver type vehicle or only used on the track?

For starters, I would suggest getting the book Turbo: Real World High-Performance Turbocharging Systems by Jay. K. Miller. ISBN 078-1-932494-29-7

Here's a good website to dig through: TheTurboForums - Index

Digging this up from a while ago, figured I'd see how your reading has gone on this subject.
The turbo I'd suggest for a stock ish 351 is a 94-98 (even a 99-03) powerstroke turbo.
The older one is a t4 flange where the superduty turbos are a round vband flange. (I make a t4 flange adaptor for my projects)
Plumbing it is easy in the old trucks. Find a set of shorty mustang headers and flip them around and put turbo on pass side (move battery to drivers because ps pump is over there and I don't want exhaust near it) and then route downpipe along valve cover and down.

I'd reccomend efi now. Use mustang 351 intake and find a harness from a foxbody (painless makes a sweet a9l ecu harness) to graft in or any other ford mass air car with tuning support.

I'm researching a turbo setup for my '68 F100. It will be an efi 351w.
I was leaning twin, But...

What's a good rule of thumb for injector sizes?
What flow rate would you need from the fuel pump?
Can a stock Fox stang computer be tuned to run this?

injectors and fuel pumps depends on your power level, same as the MAF (if you go that route)

have you considered a stand alone like a "fast"?

A mustang computer is very tuneable. They burn chips and have a number of user programming products.
Fuel pump will be a walbro hp255 or you can get a Bosch 044 pump that's about 310lph.
Walbro now makes a hp400 pump as well, but a single 255 will support 450whp.

Injectors are sized by hp. You can do formulas and stuff, but I'd suggest 30s or 42s. That will get you 400-550 hp safely.

You can use two "super 60s" which is the ford turbocoupe turbo or the t3/t4 eBay turbo, which is usually the same thing. Or if you have 600hp goal then use two holsets or a pair of decent turbonetics turbos.
I'd go single turbo and use either a 94-97 powerstroke turbo, or an ebay gt45 or t70. If you don't want eBay stuff then turbonetics make some good stuff.

there's alot more to turbo sizing than "size"

A/R has to be fgured in as well

that depends on the heads, over all bore, stroke etc

I realize that you can't just toss on a turbo from a vw or a semi truck...
I suggested those turbos because I've used them all, on 2liters all the way to a 393 stroker motor.

As far as the fuel pump requirement... No such thing as too much. When you're putting boost to anything, start with a 255. The cost is the same as the smaller ones, and its the same physical size. I run 3 190lph pumps in my turbo mustang (just because I bought 40 of them brand new takeouts) but I run 2 hp255s in the 540whp 2liter talon.
My turbo 2.3 ranger that only makes 200whp uses a walbro hp255.
The miata with a 14b uses a walbro 255.

Turbos need to be sized not only to displacement, but head flow and useage of the vehicle.
I'd put a bigger turbo (proportionally) on a 5liter mustang then an automatic 351 truck. Different power/rpm requirements for each.

Let us know your engine combo and your hp goal, and what you want to do with truck.
