SROD non-sense

a week ago when the 81 was apart I resealed the SROD (both ends, shifter and top plate) and cleaned it off.

so now my underneath is all shiny, but when I took it to test it - oil gush.

there is a small 1/8th (or less) weep hole on the top plate and the gasket underneath was acting as a baffle, I think to let fumes escape. so when I made a new gasket from rubber impregnated paper, I left it as a once pice gasket with a hole far from the weep hole - like the original.

I filled the tranny with 75-90 as suggested here.

it is so agitated, I am getting bad seepage.

1) I pluged the hole mostly with a small screw and it mostly stopped
2) is 75-90 too light? should it have been 90-140? (this is a 1981 SROD, aka T170 aka RUG)

3) should I remove the top plate bolts and thread seal them (all holes go into the case, not blind)

Anyone ever seen this? the old tranny was mostly dry, now that it has proper levels of oil, its actually kinda quiet

Quaddriver, did you ever find a solution to this issue? I've been searching the web for an answer to this same issue. I have an 83 Bronco with same SROD. I even extended the vent up about 1.5" and it still pushes fluid out. Any ideas would be great. I have drained and refilled to the proper level with 80/90 as you did.

thanks,

For the original poster who made his own gasket I think he may have inadvertently placed the new bleed hole above a gear which is forcing oil into it.

Thank you for the idea...I removed the top cover and made a new gasket being VERY carefull to put the vent holes where the factory did. I also made them smaller. And this seems to have solved the issue.

Thank you!

I made the hole in the gasket not be aligned with the hole in the cover - like the stock version was (when I did all this the tranny was sitting on my flatbed trailer all open and easy to work on...)
