My '85 had a 9er, last year was '86 iirc.

8.8s have slightly different ratios, the 3.55 you mention for example vs. the 3.5, and iirc, a 3.08 vs. the 3.0 found in the 9er, as two examples.

OP can solve it all--does your axle have a removable rear cover, or a solid housing with a drop out carrier?

I have owned two '85 F150s. One had a nine, one an 8.8. I think it is kinda a limbo era. I have seen 84s with 8.8 rears.

There is nothing wrong with the 8.8. The nine is just slightly better by design.

1965-1992 T18 transmissions fit from all gas engines. I aint sure if the diesel input shaft is different.
You need the bellhousing for your engine. I think you said you had a 4spd OD and I belive that is the same bell. I aint sure where you are at but I have a NP 435 which is slightly stronger yet with an even lower first gear.

does anyone know what kind of old tranny w/ a 10 spline input shaft would have the reverse gear over to the left and up?

1965-1992 F100-F800 trucks had optional NP435 trannys.

The only thing I can guess with the old 10 spline is somthing from a flathead or a Yblock. Over to the left and up says maby a MD or HD floorshift manual I belive borg warner built them for ford. There are also some spicer and ford factory designs that are this way.

Over to the right and up is a T98 4spd. T18 and the NP435 are over to the right and down.
