Still working on my 75 truck. It has a 302 in it and a duraspark ignition system. I want to replace the distributor- but like most of this truck it is a mis match of parts from several years. The motor is out of a later year truck- Block casting is 75- intake 77 and it has a 79 distributor in it. When replacing the distributor should I go with a 75 or 79 or does it even make a difference?
Are you having any ignition issues now?
IIRC the DS I and DS II use different plugs and don't interchange (I might be thinking of the '74 version). Check the color of the grommet on the control module. If its blue you have the DS II box, '79 distributor is DS II. The '75's came stock with DS I.
If you're going stock, just replace it with the same type thats in there now.
To tell you the truth- I bought this as a project and it has never consistently run. The distributor is the last thing that has not been replaced. Before it would run and then shut off, but always would restart after it cooled. I thought I had that solved- now it is not shuting off, but if I drive it, park it and then try and restart- it wont until it cools. It might be the same problem- because really I have just been test driving it- a couple miles at a time. Since I have had several 79s I had the common stuff on the shelf- control modual, selinoid, coil ect that I swapped on to see if I could isolate the issue- all the plugs and wiring are identical to what is on the truck. Im thinking the motor and wiring could be out of a 79 not a 75. To my knowledge the 302 was the same from 75-83 or so. But I am getting to the point where this thing has to run or go- so any help would be appreciated.
First thing, I would verify that it IS an ignition issue. The next time you get a no-start situation check the spark. If you've got spark and it doesn't start you might actually have a fuel issue.
If there is no spark then, seeing as you've already switched the coil and control box, its pretty much narrowed down to either a wiring issue or the pick-up coil in the distributor.
If you have one, swap the distributor, if not get a pick-up coil and change it.
Yep- I think thats the plan, but I was going to go ahead and replace the pick up or whole distributor since it is the only thing under the hood- that I have not replaced. I think I have ruled out fuel- I know it's getting fuel when it wont start and when running- checked the float level. I going to take your advice and stick with replacing what is in the truck now which is a 79 part. You mentioned blue grommet on the box- is that the plastic piece that the wires attach to going thru the box? I think the whole system is a 79, just by looking at it and having several of these years. Are the boxes interchangable?
Yes, the blue refers to the plastic piece. Thats how the different modules are identified, by their color. Blue is the most common and regarded by a lot of people as the best one.
Not sure how interchangeable they are though. I know there are blue, green, red, brown, yellow grommets. IIRC red was used on California emission equipped vehicles only, and yellow had three plugs instead of two.
