Which Ignitor??? There is now the I, II and III. The (I) can work off your current coil as is. The unit itself should be around $75 plus/minus $5. The (II) absolutely needs 12 volt to run correctly and so most get the Ignitor 2 with the 0.6 ohm coil. The Mustang, Park Lane, F100 and soon Polara have the (II). Cost around $136 for the combo. The Ignitor (III) is another must have 12 volts and that is going into my Cougar as we speak along with the new Isky camshaft. With the (I) keep the standard plug gap while the (II) and (III) can move up to .040-.045. I have never had a breakdown and have spares anyway, if needed, since (I) used the I before switching to the (II).

I wouldn't bother with the Duraspark, and didn't, since acquiring all the needed parts costs almost as much as the Ignitor II. I am also in the process of pulling out the Mopar electronic ignition in the Dodge due to reliability issues with the ECU, ballast and coil pickup. The early systems had many teething problems and finding two of those parts isn't easy and they are made offshore so quality is still a problem. Just had my first experiences with that as the car has been dead for two weeks now while awaiting a rebuilt distributor. Took me 10 days to figure out what the heck the problem was.

DuraSpark introduced in 1974, the ignition modules used thru 1987 were notorious for overheating-then burning out...leaving people stranded out on the road.

Where Ford mounted the modules (butted up flush against the left inner fender apron, where they got practically no airflow) had a lot to do with it.

Ford mechanics back then refered to DuraSpark as NeverSpark.

Thumbs up Pertronix

I have put the Pertronix guts in several different Ford distributors. All have worked well right from the start.
I recollect they still make one for the 240 & 300 sixes. The last one I bought was about $70 for a 460.
The Hot Spark is probably a fine system. Are there dealers around for replacement parts, if needed?

Just found a local dealer. Gonna pick one up tomorrow. I just put an OE 12v coil in today. Shouldn't have to upgrade to the flame thrower coil, should I?

Not if you are getting the Ignitor I which works off the stock coil...

My brother had his own repair shop back in 1980-84 and two things he always carried in his tool box was a Duraspark and Mopar control units. When he got his 1977 LTD II a few years ago the first thing he did was pull out the Duraspark and put in Pertronix. Oh, and thanks to him he diagnosed the problem with the Dodge in 1 minute.

110 is just for the Ignitor and the coil to go with it....He also has the II and III in stock and he said that those were a bit more money.

The III combines their previous design with was is essentially a mini MSD box inside the unit. The Cougar's engine is anything but stock.

I need to read better.....I think I remember using the HEI control module instead of the duraspark for durability reasons.....I still have issues with timing related to the vacuum advance....not sure what I am doing wrong there!!

I am confused....I obtained a ford pickup coil for electronic ignition(off a 70's engine) to get rid of my points also.
I hooked that up to an HEI control module(I have another question posted about this on here)
Did I not need the HEI to make that work? Would I be better off getting rid of the ford pick up coil and going to the pertronix set up?

What is the stock # on your Ignitor II? Is it the 91261? Wanna make sure I order the right one the first time.
