Newbie with questions

Hi, all. I just picked up a 1966 F100 a few days ago so I guess I'm now a member of this craziness. I've searched since I picked up the truck but I keep getting conflicting information so I thought I would screw up the courage to ask for some history on my new toy.

VIN = F10YL874981
Color = H
Body = D81
Trans = C
Axle = 17
DSO = 63

Sorry for yet another VIN decoding.

1st & foremost "Welcome Aboard"; I'll decode with what inof I have; so if I miss something others will chime in soon.
F10YL87981
F10 = F100 2WD
874981= Built June 1966
Y= 352 V-8 2V 208 Hp
L= Assembly plant code of Michigan
Color H = Light Beige
Body D81= Customcab trim (I'm not smart enough to decipher interior trim color)
Transmission C = 3 spd Manual Light Duty
Axle 17= 3:25 ratio
DSO 63 ?

Hope this helps ya!

Welcome to FTE

H = Sahara Beige aka Light Beige.

D81: D = Medium Beige Crush Vinyl & Medium Beige Cody Pattern Woven Plastic // 81 = 81B Custom Cab.

C = Ford type 3.03 3 Speed Manual all Syncromesh Transmission.

17 = Ford 9" Rear Axle / 3.25-1 / non Limited Slip / 3,300 lb. Rear Axle Capacity.

63 = Memphis TN Ford District Sales Office, where the original selling dealer ordered the truck from.

Mitch, don't put yourself down. You are smart enough to decode the "interior trim color" (BODY) code, but you don't have the parts catalog that's necessary to do this.

Thanks for picking up my slack Bill; Those two area's I havn't at my disposal / hand resource for DSO & Interior.

I have learned alot from you about the interior coding. Especially to determine Custom Cab from Standard. Didn't realize certain Axle #'s determine type ie 9" verse say a Dana 44. Thought ( Letters) determnie those differences.

Thanks Bill; your a great mentor to us FTE'rs & a good friend to know.

1959 thru today: If the AXLE code listed on the Warranty Plate (1959/80), Certification Label (1981 to date) begins with a letter: Limited Slip.

If with a number, no Limited Slip.

While the 9" was available in Passenger Cars beginning in 1959 with Limited Slip, Ford didn't offer it until mid-year 1968 in F100's. Prior to mid-year 1968, F100's with Limited Slip rear axles were either Dana 44's or Dana 60.2's

Mitch and Bill,

Thanks for all the information. I look forward to learning more from you guys. I learned to drive on a '65 but this truck is for my 14 year old daughter believe it or not. She saw it and wants to learn to work on it and restore it so who am I to deny her? :-)
