Vin Decoder
I picked up a 1980 F350 at an auction on the weekend. I'm not having much luck with the VIN decoders. Can someone help me out.

I'm no VIN guru, but it sure looks short to me, the decoders will not accept them without all characters.
Have you tried
Ford Fleet - Maintenance - VIN Decoder with a full and proper VIN.

Most of these sites work with 82 or newer vehicles. Mine is a shorter VIN than the newer ones.

Aye, knew they changed it, didn't know when ...
I'm sure there will be someone along shortly that can decode it!

1980's are fun to have, lots of things are different from the 81-86, especially the vin. In 1981 Ford switched to 17 digit vins.
Your vin decodes as:
F37- F350 (Not sure about the 7, but might be 4x4?)
Z-V8 400ci 6.6 liter 2bbl carb
P- Twin Cities MN assembly plant
HG2912- consecutive unit number. Nobody knows what the first two letters stand for on these trucks, so you don't worry about it.

Not only Ford but the U.S. auto industry as a whole.

It's a dually but not a 4x4. Maybe that's what the 7 is. The engine size was what had me wondering. Is there an easy way to confirm it is 400 cu. in.
Thanks,
Fred

Look on the radiator top bracket for your smog sticker, should say 6.6L or on the driver side valve cover 351M/400 family, then actual displacement.
If all those are gone/unreadable, I think the only way to definatley find out is to tear it down. However being that it is an 80 F350, I would lean towards 400.

Count the number of bolts holding on the valve covers; 8 bolts == 351M/351C/400.
Similarly, the fuel pumps are held on with two VERTICALLY-ALIGNED bolts, this is the
only Ford engine family to do this.
