Lightbulb Exhaust question

I was wondering if putting 3 or 4 inch exhaust on my truck will hurt the proformance of it. I have a 1996 ford F250 7.5 V8 460 with a K&N cold air intake i have the stock exhaust on witch i think is a 2 inch or small dual exhaust i think it go to a dual after teh muffler. what i want to do is go from the engine back with a 3 or 4 inch pipe with the muffler and all that. any help or suggestion would be great.
Thanks

3" would be great, 4" is too large. If you go too large, the engine will loose low end torque because the exhaust won't scavenge properly. A single 3" will flow plenty well for a big V8.

Thumbs up thanks

Thanks for replying, so 3 inch is the way to go, will I lost any torque or horsepower by going to a 3 inch?
Thanks again.

If you were to loose any, it would be not be noticed. The 460 seems to like a 3" system.

I agree a single 3" should work well. I would recommend a larger capacity muffler like with a least an 18"case depth. Not these small capacity car mufflers that a lot of manufacturers push.

Thanks everyone for replying! I want to know if you guys think this sounds right I was told that i cant put a 3 inch exhaust on my truck from the engine back, the only way i can do it is from the catalytic converter back meaning it will be a oem exhaust until the catalytic conerter then a 3 inch pipe to the new muffler then out of the muffler with a 3 inch pipe. does that sound right and will that give me the better profomance? Also any suggestions of what type and name of muffler to buy?
Thanks again

You won't see any performance gains worth talking about with a catback alone, the stock cats have to go it's as simple as that. Do you live in an area with emissions testing? If so you may have to keep the stock y-pipe or at least install an aftermarket system that is visually identical. Another possibility is to install an aftermarket cat on the stock y-pipe.. it's the cat that is the BIG choke point anyway, see Magnaflow and Catco for options.

Sorry it took so long to reply, I live in Montana and we have no emission laws except a sound law it cant be over so many db's. So if i take out the catalytic converter and then will i just put in a increaser to increase the pipe coming from the engine to the muffler or will it be the same size pipe from the engine to the muffle then go to a 3 inch pipe out of the muffler. Sorry for being so confusing I just want to get it right.

Well, the pipes coming of the motor (plural) are 2.25", and they run into an oval flange that bolts to the cat. You can bring those dual 2.25" pipes into a single 3" without any problems.

Go to a good muffler shop you can trust and have your exhaust back pressure tested, they will drill a small hole in your exhaust pipe just off the manifolds, hold a pressure gage to it and goose the engine a few times. If the pressures are within specs you'll be burning your money if you do anything with the exaust system... been there.

I have a custom Y-pipe 2.5" duals into 3" single on my 5.4L and I had no loss in drive-ability. The factory cats are still in place.

Thanks everyone for replying. I took my truck to a good muffler shop and the guy there said "Yes it always helps exhaust with bigger motors to open them up" so I am going to take everyone advice and take the cat off and go to a 3inch pipe to the muffler and then have them put a good muffler on and then continue with a 3inch out of the muffler. Ill update again as soon as i get it done and let everyone know the out come. Thanks again
